38 Perfected? or what?
Guy has what I think is a perfected.
4", 38 S&W.
Patent dates have me thrown off. Standard Cat says last patent date is 1909....
This one has three dates on it, according to him:
feb 6 1906, sept14 1909, and dec 29 1914
"All numbers match even the grips. Has 4" barrel and original blueing. Serial # 5881X"
Any help would be great!

The photo is a .38 DA Perfected. Don't know what to tell you about the patent dates but they sound as though they are from a .38 Military & Police (post-1915).

The letter on mine has they were made from 1908 till 1920 with 59,400 made.
Mine is S/N is 4482X shipped date of Oct. 15, 1913.
So the patent dates are correct.

A very nice old gun, too. 4" is not that usual, IIRC...I'd bet it's a good shooter.

I have a late Perfected with the 1914 patent date on it and have found examples as early as 50,XXX with that date. I am guessing that there were less than 10,000 made with the 1914 patent.

Any ideas on value?
I'm thinking the serial number provided us short a digit at the end

I can find nothing that supports any value added with the 1914 patent date, so value would be condition based and my recollection of recent auction prices realized.
There are several factors that affect value. Obviously, your revolver is not considered an antique, so the value is affected by the fact that the Perfected Model will need to be registered in many states. Your condition is a little difficult to nail down, but it looks like original finish and maybe 90% condition. Lastly, these revolvers were very popular with the export market, especially in Europe and South America and, therefore, somewhat scarce in the US. I would value your revolver at $500 +/-. One recently sold at auction for $800 and others as low as $350, so depends on the number of bidders present at any particular auction who want that particular gun.

If that Perfected's SN is 5 digits, it was shipped around 1920. If it is only 4 digits, that would put it around 1909-10. Since it has a 1914 patent date, it is likely the former. Is it local, Larry? If so, I'd like to see it. If it's not local, ask for more pictures as it looks like the barrel may have a rust spot on it.

"
The spot on the barrel is missing the blue but not rusted. And there is a DIGIT after that number sorry. But on the rest of the gun all the numbers are the 4 digits
Just on the bottom of grip is the five digit
"

Interesting - you are saying that the other serial numbers are the same except for the last number?
I had to check my Perfecteds, but found the entire serial number at the rear of the cylinder and on the underside of the latch. The number stamped between the "ears" of the barrel frame behind the latch do have 4 digits on the right and the 5th digit on the left. Is that different than yours?

Yes sir. Misinformation from working remotely. Trying to help another fella out.
Thank you all for your help. I think the owners know what they have now. It is a neat model.
