Default Serial number on a Smith and Wesson model one.

I have what looks a Smith and Wesson model one except mine has engraving on it. I have looked all over the pistol and can't find the serial number. I have looked under the grips as well as under the but of the handle and I don't see any numbers.
Does anyone have any idea where it would be.
The only numbers I have is on the holster. It says S & W 38
DA-5. That's it and its not on the pistol its on the holster.
Thanks
Dave

Welcome to the forum from the Wiregrass! You need to post some pictures. It will be hard to tell you anything without being able to see different parts of the gun. Take close ups of both sides of the gun, the top of the barrel, the butt frame, the rear of the cylinder and under the barrel latch. Remove the grips and take pictures of both sides of the grip frame. You can attach up to 5 800x800 pixel pictures per post. Or, you can upload the pictures to a hosting site, like Flickr, and post the URL to the pictures in the post. You can post more than 5 per post from a hosting site.

Welcome. You state you have a Model 1. That would make it a tip-up gun. If a tip-up 22rf, the butt and the inside of the right rosewood stock only one places you will find a serial number. If it is not a tip-up 22, you have a different model, so let us know or post some pictures.

I have a Model 1 that I inherited from my grandfather who was born in 1896 and died in 1955. As stated in the earlier post, the serial number is on the butt of the gun. I am awaiting my letter from S&W to get a bit more history on this particular gun. It is a beautiful piece, a gold plated presentation gun, that was given to him as a gift by the Springfield, MA police Dept some time in the 40s. I look forward to learning where and when it was originally shipped. Congrats on your Model 1!
