Default Old Single Action Top Break - Value and Caliber?

Hello

I have an Old single action top break S&W. The only real blemish I can see is the chip in the grip panel which can only be seen from below. Barrel is 3 1/4" long. Can anyone tell me what caliber this little baby is (32 cal?) and how much it is worth?
The only markings I can find are the S/N (or assembly number?) - 40971; and the usual patent and re-issue dates on the top of the barrel:
"Smith & Wesson Springfield Mass USA Pat'D Jan 17 & 24.65 July 11.65 Aug 24.69 Jan 19, 1875 Reissue July 25, 1871"
It has a strain screw and fixed top break sights, and all numbers on cyl, yoke and base of grips match.
(See Pics below)

TIA

Your revolver is a S&W 38 Single Action Second Model, .38 S&W caliber. The pictures seem to show pitting under what appears to be a cold blue refinish. There were many of this Model made and are fairly common. Based on what looks like a pitting under a cold blue refinish and broken grip I would place the valve at $100 to $200.

Welcome to the Forum. There's good news and bad news. The good news is that you have come to the right place to get an honest answer , and the bad news is that I think Bruce Mower ( the above poster ), a very knowledgeable S&W collector, is being very generous. I would call the gun a near example of a wall hanger. It has been brought back from the grave, but not very far. If the gun can function mechanically it might be worth $100 as a shooter, otherwise the interior parts might bring a few dollars, but the exterior parts are unusable. Ed.
