S&W top break pearl grips nickel finish?
Hi guys,
I'm no expert on nickel finish but i'm suspect on this S&W tip up or top break. While the finish looks good (maybe too good). Were the trigger's nickled as this one? I am guessing this is a re-nickel but the lettering and S&W logo sure look crisp and original. Maybe not to the trained eye. Anyway photos attached. .. I realize refinished weapons don't always follow logic but this appears to be in the original box , pearl grips, and no signs of previous rust or pitting so why refinish? I reckon I'm just in denial. Thanks again.

I am far from an expert. I have a .38 Safety Hammerless 4th Model with a nickel finish showing its age. The trigger, trigger guard, and the T-Latch to open the break-top are blued on mine.
Mine also has a 5 pointed star below the serial number on the butt which is an indication it has been returned to S&W in its life time for either a refinish and/or a major part replacement.
I would guess yours has been re-nickeled and not by the factory. Is there a 5 point star next to your butt serial number? I am also not sure your Mother of Pearl grips are original.
It is a beautiful piece.

Renickel. Edges are "soft"; not S&W factory quality. Your fourth photo showing the barrel hinge, also shows nickel at the end of the frame where the metal has been broken (?) and is not correct for factory quality. It is nice but not factory quality.

It has been re-nickeled and not by the factory. Your hammer and trigger should be color-case hardened. The factory NEVER plated the hammer and trigger until recently. I would imagine someone could special order them plated but they were custom jobs only. Also the barrel release should be blue.
