Default It has the power !

Hello, today with this sun of spring, I decide to do some shoots with a friend.
I use my New Departure cal 38 with 14 g of black powder and my friend a Remington sheriff cal 44 with 19 g of black powder.
The target is an 1'57 board and we shoot at 27 yard.

It has the power !-1img_1024-jpg
The red arrows are the holes of the S&W

The bullets of the S&W cross the board and the metal can
The balls of the Remington don't across the board.
It has the power !-1img_1025-jpg
What a pleasure !!

The standard .38 S&W BP loading back in the day was 14 grains and a 146 grain bullet. The MV (depending upon barrel length and the specific revolver) would be around 600-650 ft/sec.

What does "The target is an 1'57 board" mean? 1.57 cm?

While a .451 lead round ball bullet would weigh about the same as the 146 grain .38 bullet, it has a lower sectional density. At approximately the same velocity, it would be expected to penetrate less.

Default The OP...

neglected to mention how thick the board is, but from the first photo, it appears to be only 2-3mm: more like a piece of veneer than of lumber.
At the (presumed) range of 25M, BOTH pistols should have easily penetrated such a target - if the .44 Remington didn't, there is something badly wrong with its performance.
I'd have expected both to be able to penetrate at least 25mm (an inch) of soft wood at that range.

The board is 4cm of pine (we make shutters for windows with it)
The lead round ball of the Remington is a .454 with 19g of Vectan PNF2.

You do a much better job of translating to English, than I would to French. Keep up the good work. Thanks.
