Red Mottled Stocks Question.
There is what I believe to me a 32 Double Action 4th model for sale about 3 hours from me it has the aforementioned Red grips . I don't have pictures at the moment but is said to be in good working order but no finish left grips are said to be in good shape . The question is how much would the grips add to the value of a otherwise average 4th model .

Good find. I think you are in the correct time period. I know you have no further info. To many questions right now. What is he seeking for the sale?
I have bought several mottled grips in various colors. If you can, remove the right grip and see if it Sn to the frame. Value, $80.

Remember, buying the grips separately is much different than the value of a revolver that letters with the red mottled grips...

Genuine red motley S&W stocks ( not repos ) can bring in excess of $100 a pair, if minty, on Ebay. Black hard rubber stocks, in same condition will bring $50 range, so the math tells red is twice black. and also that red on a gun adds $50 to the value. Not always so, if the gun is in marginal condition. Be sure the stocks in the auction are not reproductions. Ed.

Hello Ed, need a tutorial on detecting org. from repro?
I think it has something to do with the the backside of the grips?
Plus the detail on the front? Am I close? Best, Mike

Well grips aren't as good as suggested. He is asking $175 which would be a ok price if the grips were in good shape. I restored a few black ones that were similarly damaged and they looked ok but don't know about doing these. If he will come off the price and agree on shipping it to me as a antique which I believe it is I may still buy it.

OH MY! That is quite a chunk. I have a set just like those.
People must have dropped their guns a lot back then.
For $175, I think I would walk, and not waste the three hour drive. But, your call.

It has nothing to do with dropping a gun. It has everything to do with people not knowing there is a pin holding the stocks on. When you try to take off the stock, pry from the top and pull down, snap! That's why you mostly see only one stock broken. Most people learn from breaking one, and it is usually the side with the serial number on it.

Don, OK, one of many possibilities . If you look at bottom of the grip, there is a very evident ding or crease in the frame. It is the left side.
Now, how do you tell the difference between orig. and repro? The detail or the backside?

iMottled factory grips are not that common but in the current condition, they adds ZIP (NADA, NOTHING, ZERO) to the value of the gun. Had they been in excellent, or as new condition, I'd easily kick $100+ for the grips alone. Deducting for normal wear on a percentage scale, but damaged .... no serious lover of the grips will give them a second look (unless, perhaps youhave the exact piece that had broken off, after which they'd always be cursed as :repaired). I have purchased many an oldie I didn't need nor want, just for the mottled grips. Reminds me of the Revolving Rifle Grips and forearm piece.
Ed Cornett and Don Mundell who commmented are on the mark.
Too bad !

I believe an internet search will come up with at least one company still in business that makes reproduction red mottled stocks for S&Ws as well as for the revolving rifles. Some companies have been hassled by S&Ws legal dep't over reproducing the logo, so have dropped making S&W repos. Also, Don Furr does excellent repairs of red mottled hard rubber stocks. Contact Don at email [email protected] . Ed.

Hello Ed., did a search for repro. red mottled grips. Im coming up with nothing. If you have some thing tucked away, please share.
I believe the other factory colors were green, blue and yellow? Am I close to getting it correct. Best

Mike, You're correct on the colors. I don't have a current source of the repo red grips and the various repo grip place you see in an internet search did not show any that currently had them. Ebay and gun shows seem to be the only source at this time. S&WCA Member, Jim King, may have better info., as he collects grips. See the Roster for his contact info. Ed.
