A fellow contacted me about this gun he would like to part with. I would like to be able to tell him what it is and approximate value it might be worth. Would it be within the realm that S&W would ship this gun in the box it is in? I have not physically handled the gun but might be able to. Any help would be appreciated.

CORRECTION: 32 Double Action, 4th Model and it is an antique, so no BATF form involved in the sale. Would have likely shipped from the factory in 1888.

The box should have a pencil written serial number on the bottom towards the opposite end as the label. Your problem is that it is the wrong box for your gun. Label is later than 1890 and it stated the box should have a blued 32 Safety. Nice condition, but suffers from top-breakitis. These revolvers are not in high demand and, therefore, not high price. I have found that selling a box with a gun brings little to no value add, so thinking at auction it could go for $300 without the box. One could sell the box for $100 separately.

The box is for a 32 safety hammerless qalso call New Departure so no relation to the gun.
Is it a 38 or a 32?
