Default Looking For Info On This Antique Revolver...

Looking for any info. on this antique S&W .38 cal. revolver...
The gun and 5 bullets were given to me by my great Uncle years ago. He said it was issued to him while employed as a Guard.
When he retired, the company gave it to him as a retirement gift.

Any assistance would be greatly appreciated!
Thank you in advance!!

Hi There,

Welcome to our Group!

You have a .38 S&W "New Departure" Safety Hammerless; Third
Model. These were made between 1890 and 1898 (Serial number
range 42484 to 116002).

Cheers!
Webb

As has already been said, this is a .38 New Departure, also known as a .38 Safety Hammerless. These were some of Smith & Wesson's bread-and-butter guns before the hand ejector (side swing cylinder) revolvers took over.

Based on other guns we've lettered, this probably shipped from the factory circa 1895.
