On the right side of the barrel, why do some have a two line barrel address and others a one line barrel address and when did the change occur?

I missed out on a decent one yesterday at an excellent price because I didn’t hear the phone ring. Or maybe it’s not an original 2” barrel?

It does have a number stamped on it that was after the time of manufacture with nickel in the digits, but I’m not sure if that was possible without renickeling, but, other than a slightly weak logo, which could be an optical illusion, I don’t think it was renickeled.

mrcvs,

Having collected Safeties for quite a number of years in the past...I do believe the Revolver you posted most likely is the Original Finish & was shipped with the 2-Inch Barrel as best as I can seel!!

As to when S&W changed from the Two-Line Address to the Single-Line Address on the 2nd Model .32 Safeties...As best as I can tell by memory it was somewhere around the 150,000-155,000 Ser. No. Range as best as I can tell from information I have recorded in the past...It could of course be a bit higher given the Highest Ser. No. on a 2nd Model Safety with a Two-Line Address I now have on record at the moment is in the 151,000 Ser.No. Range!!

As an aside...Please don't take that as gospel because sure enough someone will come along and up the Ser. No. Range a bit given the way my luck runs...Ha!!-Ha!!

Also as to the Rack No. I believe you were referring to stamped sideways on the Grip-Frame's Toe being finished over...I can't give you a definite answer without a clearer photo because after editing & enhancing the one you posted...I can't get it clear enough to see if it was stamped through the Original Finish or not...Sorry!!

I hate to say what this sold for yesterday. Under $600! If I heard the phone ring, I would either have had it for that, or more, or someone would have paid much more dearly for it!

mrcvs,

Sounds like it's time to either turn up the volume on your hearing aid...Or at least change out the batteries because you missed a "Dandy" for that kind of money...Ha!!-Ha!!

New phone, set up on Friday, didn’t realize the problem. Few bargains at auction anymore, but this was one of them. $500 plus buyer’s premium and shipping.

mrcvs - do you mind sharing the serial number? Is it 164736? The patents on the right were the most common. I have about 80 guns in my records that have a 2" or 1 1/2" barrel. With all Smith and Wesson there was a transition between the single line and double line patents. My records have a 2 line patent in the 174xxx range with the first single line patent starting in the 155xxx range. My records are not complete because I started tracking that feature a little way into my research. I also have not tracked if guns are factory original, just if they have the proper 2" barrel markings to be factory made 2" barrels.

Yes, you are correct.

By the way, how “rare” are these Bicycle revolvers? They show up with enough frequency that I question their “rarity”. I don’t think they are even uncommon.
