How about showing us any of your safety hammerless .32s or .38s? Here's one I couldn't resist buying at a gun show a year or so ago. It was nearly perfect; in fact I think it's unfired! It letters as having been made in 1921. I'm not firing it, although I have ammo. It's just too nice not to keep pristine!

DHenry:

What are the date ranges on 3rd, 4th, 5th models? Were they in manufacture simultaneously?

I ask because 1930 seems late for a 3rd.

Thanks

Polyphemus, The 3rd model 32 Safety was manufactured in the same time frame as the 38 Safety.

Polyphemus,
It shipped January 4th, 1930, to H.D. Folsom Arms Co., New York.
The Third Model, introduced in 1909, was manufactured until 1937.
Total production (a bunch !) was 72,981 guns.
I think most people think of even the last 'lemon squeezers' as guns that were 'done with' by the early 1920's.

DHenry, clfier:

I didn't consider the .32s. Paladin's 1921 looks to be a 5th model, the integral (unpinned) foresight is the tell according to Sulpica. I have no idea what the model years were for the .32.

Thanks

Cflier, thanks for the kind words.

You sure have a herd of them... and all good looking.

Saw one today in the 178,xxx range with USX marking on the leftside. Seller was asking $600 for it! It was pretty well worn and no box.

Digi
I've owned two USX marked 38 Safetys, one in the 176000 range. I've seen a few others also. I lettered both and both shipped to MW Robinson in NY. Roy has said that he has numbered others with USX markings that shipped to the same distrubuter, but that doesn't mean anything. The two that I owned had different stampings and lettering. Were they real or not? There is no way to tell, so I sold them and will not buy anymore unless they are already lettered conclusively as being shipped to one of the old shipping companies. There were several companys that had there own police/gaurd force and they did supply them with weapons. The problem is that few of those guns were bought directly from the manufacturers. So, seeing them is not unusual, but you never know for sure that what you see is legitimate. Unfortunately there are people out there who have figured out that they can double the price of a gun by just stamping some letters and numbers on an old revolver.

Here's mine. It belonged to my grandmother. I think it was from mid-1930s. I don't have access to my notes at the moment.

You guys sure does have some beauties on your hands. Wow!

Does anyone have a manual on these things or a website where I can find one?

Here's my 3rd Model 3" Safety Hammerless, I don't have a picture of the 2nd Model I picked up last winter yet, and I have a line on a 1st Model. I didn't realize the 1st models were so much more than the others.

Seems like half the guns I buy lately are .32's, but not the more modern "Safety Hammerless" Centennial.

Origional finish? Really looks nice. I'm assuming that's a 5th Model 38?

I'm glad I have something scarce enough that it was only in cfliers pic in this thread: a Z bar 1st model new departure. I got lucky at a gunshow, $300 Its only a 3 digit gun too, IIRC SN 557. Pictured with it are a 2nd model and a 4th model.

With the 32 new departures I think I have one of each of the models in that photo. I hope to find many more, but I need to wait for the better specimens. When I see these for $200 or less, I frequently buy them.

Default Can you help me with age and value?

My father recently passed away and in the process of going through his personal belongings, we found this lemon squeezer. We will be liquidating his estate soon and I would like to find the age and the value of this pistol. I live 500 miles away from my family and asked that they send me a photo to post. Sorry, but they sent a poor quality cell phone shot of it. The pistol looks to be in really good shape with no cracks on the pearl handles. There are a few dark spots on the nickel plate. The serial number is 229651. I would appreciate your help.

5 or 6 years ago I let this one go. I was stupid and didn't appreciate it for what it was and thought I needed something else. I am still kicking myself and this is one of the trades that made me promise to never get rid of any firearms again.

I believe it was a 5th model and I am working on replacing it.....
live and learn.

nice examples everyone.

Sorry, but they sent a poor quality cell phone shot of it. The pistol looks to be in really good shape with no cracks on the pearl handles. There are a few dark spots on the nickel plate. The serial number is 229651. I would appreciate your help.
.32 Safety Hammerless 3rd Model. 73,000 made from 1909 to 1937. My own 228xxx dates to 1923 so yours would be around 1925 give or take a couple. I would say $300 the top you should expect out of it, but others can opine if they don't agree. If I were in a hurry to sell, I'd mark it at $275.

Default my 32 safety

Hi am new to hand guns but my uncle gave me this to get me started. I must admit it is a cool little gun and if i can find ammo i cant wait to shoot it. If possible can someone tell me the age of the gun and the type of ammo I can use. I know its 32 short but is it black powder?

I have a S&W 545xx. if I am reading some post correctly this would be pre 1900? Any help would be received graciously.

Thanks,

I recently bought my first Safety and now have seven. They are very adictive, do not take up much room in the safe, and are great fun to shoot.

I now have three 38s and four 32s. There is one 38, 3rd Model, one 38, 4th Model, and one 38 5th Model. I have one 32, 1st Model, one 32, 2nd, and two 32 3rd in the collection to date.

Here is what I have to date, along with 3 different barrel stampings that appeared on the 32 Safeties through the years.

Joe, welcome to the Forum. That 32 Safety, 1st Model would have shipped from the factory 1894-1895.

As you later stated, it is a 38 Safety. It is most likely a 3rd Model and, if so, would have been made from 1890 to 1898. Standard factory ammunition available today will work just fine in your revolver, since the smokeless loads are very mild.

I forgot to mention that the revolver has been re-nickeled at some point in its life. You can always tell by looking for rounded edges and buffed stampings. It will not affect the function of the gun and these are fun to shoot.

Here is the set I have put together. One each 1st model, 2nd model and 3rd model. Then the 2nd model "Bicycle" safety.
