I recently picked up this brass No. 2 Army copy. The markings are Japanese prefectural registry markings from Kumagaya Prefecture (which merged in 1876). Has anyone else seen one like this? I'm sure it isn't of British or Belgian origin as there are no proofs or other markings.

I've placed it alongside an authentic No. 2 Army for purposes of comparison.

I have received e mails regarding this gun. I have over forty number twos in the data base with oriental markings the majority being Japanese. Some years ago Arnie Chernof sold me a prototype model number two. I was just starting to collect model number twos. He convinced me it was a proto type, As I studied the model number two in became quite clear that it was a copy never able to figure out the maker.
as near as I can recall it was very similar to the one that I had.

Hope this helps

Ron Curtis

Ron,

Did this "prototype" you bought have a brass frame?

The pictures show up on your computer because they are on your hard drive. None of us have access to your hard drive, so we are SOL.

You have to put them on an internet server (like PhotoBucket) for all of us to see them.

Sorry again for the trouble. I've become accustomed to posting on another site that stores posted images on its own server.

I've checked into Photobucket but, frankly, I'm uncomfortable with registering at a site that requires a subscriber's home mailing address. Are there any alternatives to Photobucket for image storing/posting?

C/[/QUOTE Yes, I looks pretty close to the one I had. The top of bbl rib marked Smith & Wesson
Recoil shield was straight, Grips not rosewood Not a S&W Blue,

In looking at my notes that is all I can recall.
The photos of this gun were lost when John Otteman took all of our photos back to Singapore to be used in our book

Ron

Now that we have the capability to add photos directly, here is an updated post, along with a side-by-side comparison of the brass-framed No. 2 alongside a S&W-made No. 2. While I'm saving much information for an upcoming publication, the differences between the two weapons are quite apparent.

The only address Photobucket has ever asked me for is my e-mail address. But there are lots of alternatives. TinyPic is good for small numbers of pics, and you don't even have to register.

Thanks for the posting suggestion, but I was stymied back in November by the lack of photo posting capability on this site. Now the problem is moot.
