Default 58 Mis-labeled box Chiefs Special?

I have a weird one. 1958 Flat Latch 36, pre Bangor Punta box with registration, manual, packing paper etc. Looks 1000% correct! Here is the rub, end label is marked "Roud Butt". I can not imagine these were printed individually. Anybody have any ideas? Thanks

Is the box numbered to the gun on the bottom?

Labels have been faked. I've not seen the word 'round' mis-spelled like that on an authentic label before but that doesn't mean it didn't happen.

Box is marked to a 1956 production gun so it is a non-serial matching, but marked 94506 none the less. Tape covering label matches the color of something from that time period, ike you had left it in a scrap book. I know people are faking boxes now but in the 60's? Sure matches other similar period boxes I have.
Thanks

I couldn't tell from the photo that the tape is over the label, so you're probably right. If we can hear from at least one other poster to this thread that they have the same spelling on an original old box, it's probably legit.

The box and contents look consistent with the serial number on the bottom, and I'm not sure what to make of the "roud butt" marking. I gather it is printed and taped onto the box end? Looks like one of those dreaded "factory errors"; it probably has "squre butt" printed underneath it .

Perhaps someone else has a similar one to share.

It was a slower pace back then. I can see someone taking the time to add that at the factory.
I've seen them where they crossed out a number (for barrel length) to make it another length.
I've also seen little "nickel" stickers added to a 1950 Target box.
Looks legit to me, but that's just my opinion.

Here is an added label, that I know is authentic, for comparison.

It seems if you were going to fake a label you would not misspell it.

Remember the bank robber who handed a note to the teller demanding cash? The note was written on the back of one of his deposit slips. Or the faked Colt Calvary SAA on a "smokeless powder" frame?

I don't think that is a faked label at all. We see a lot of faked labels with a certain criminal making Colt boxes and labels. This is not his work, for example.

The label looks genuine to me.

Another observation - S&W didn't "print" their own labels. Like any other company, they had printing companies contract to make them. It's a misspelling, nothing more.

Forget about it, relax, and enjoy your nice gun and box

I suggest that you start a new thread titled specifically about late "50's J frame box labels" and you should get a lot more responses and examples.

yessir, an entire book could be written on the variations, types, colors what was in what box and when...and yes should include pictures, with credits due to whomever....tons, and tons of stories and tales ( S&W lore) as to what people have and the' packages' they came in........do a LOT of "home work" and investigation and find out who supplied the various boxes over the years, who provided and printed any and ALL of the labels, etc.,, trouble is MOST of the old timers who rewrote, marked or pasted over ANY factory labels are dead and gone, so again, all comes under "S&W Lore.................
