Default Help identify and value

I would appreciate any help I could get in identifying and evaluating a revolver.

Gun in question has a 4" pinned barrel, "squiggly hammer", 5 screw, .38 Special, no model number. Thanks for looking.

.38 Combat Masterpiece, after 1957 it was designated the Model 15.
Nice lookin' gun.

An early-ish one, likely from 1951. A little honest wear on the original finish. Very nice!

Your .38 Combat Masterpiece was made in 1951. A nice example, with what appear to be original stocks.

The "squiggly hammer" is called a "High Speed" hammer and was introduced in 1948. It was standard on the K frames for a few years.

BTW the trigger shoe is not original. Those were a common add-on back in the day. Some like them, some don't. Eventually, a wider target trigger was made available, obviating the need for such additions.

That's a nice early Com. Mast. you have there.

As Jack posted it has the high speed short action and hammer, the first post war new hammer. Yours has the .375" wide spur version for the target model K frames.

The standard K frame with fixed sights had a similar hammer that was straight sided with only a .265" wide spur. These hammers were nick named "fish hook" hammers.

Back to the Combat Masterpiece, thank you all for the great information. The gun is not mine, but belongs to a friend. He is in need of some money, and wants to sell it. I am trying to find what would be a fair price for it (for both of us). Any help there would be much appreciated.

Well Sir,

I can tell you that I'd give five Benjamins for that nice gun quick as you like! And I suspect I'd also give more, and I suspect it would bring more. Especially if it's in good functioning condition. Others keep up with today's prices better than I do, so maybe they will chime it. I'm just sayin' that if 5 bills was my opening bid at the auction for that gun, I'm doubtful if it would get the hammer!!
