Pre 29 market
I came across a pre 29 recently. Decent looking condition based on pictures, maybe 90%. It is a 4" with cokes and box and tools. The book says $1700 for good condition with 25% premium for 4" barrels. That would seem to indicate $2200 to 2300... search of GB closed auctions shows lots for sale, few sold. Those sold were selling for less than nice 29-2s. Is the market soft on these? Anyone have any thoughts to share on this. Asking price is $ 1700.

Saw a pre 29 4 inch with the black box for sale a few days ago for $ 4250,but not an auction. 44`s seem to be dropping, and 27`s are increasing in value on non auction sites

I would go buy that if it looks as nice in hand as in the pictures. How many can there be. JIM

A LGS I deal with has one on consignment for $4995.00. The seller set the price. It's been there a really long time.

Is this an apple or an orange?
I mean, is it a 4 Screw or a 5 Screw? There is a BIG difference between the two. An original 4" 5 Screw is a rare bird.
Which case is that? Hinged latch or button latch? Is it numbered on the bottom? There is a BIG difference between the two.
I don't think that screwdriver is correct.
Mop is later- aluminum threads.
So, what we are talking:
An all original 5 Screw 4" PACKAGE with the correct case and tools is a different fruit from a conglomerated package of mismatched parts, some of which are not from the correct era.

At $1700 it's a no brainer. The cokes are worth $500, the box is worth $500, the SAT is worth $150. So that leaves a 4" pre 29 for $550. I'm in at that price.

I think I'd be a buyer too at $1700. Definitely would if it is a 5 screw and probably would even if a 4 screw if condition is good. Think I paid more for a six inch 4 screw without box/tools a couple years ago although that likely wasn't a great price. As to whether the market for these is soft, maybe for the lesser condition guns. For top condition pre-29s I don't think prices are down much. Good luck.

Can you see if the barrel is numbered to the gun? If so, probably an original 5-screw 4"...well worth the asking price for the gun alone. If the other parts of the package don't match, sell them and the gun is even less expensive for you.

Book?
What book are you referring to?
It has been my observation, over may years, that the prices on these are never close to any "book" suggested prices, simply because of their limited availability.
15 Years ago, at large gun auction, I had my,Nov. 4th, 5 screw, 4 inch, pre-29 for sale with a reserve of $5000. No box, no docs, no tools. Bidding went to $3500 before petering out. I wouldn't sell it for that today, either.
In my opinion, books are pretty far off as far as what these are worth.

Book values are worthless, except for relative values. Dealers like them when they want to steal your guns.

Agreed. Recent GunBroker or auction sale prices for completed sales are better indication than a book which maybe 10 years out of date

"Completed Auctions" on gunbroker.com is a good source of information. Sort by "number of bids".

I just bought one last weekend for 1750 without the cokes! It’s a 4” 4 screw. Nice shape, what’s a few hundred one way or the other. It’s been said many times on here I never get buyers remorse, but I have been bitten many times by the should bought it when I saw it.
