I have US Army of 1917 maked revolver. Under the Us Army Model of 1917 there is no 5 and a 3 digit number. On the yoke is an S with a different 3 digit number and on the cylinder is a 6 digit number what one is the correct serial number? Also any way to tell when it was produced?

That is the serial number. On an all original M1917, you would see the same number on the barrel and cylinder. Of course, sometimes these parts were replaced. The number on the butt of the frame is always the true serial number.

To find out when yours was made, go to this webpage and enter the serial number:

Welcome to the forum.

S&W put the serial number on the butt, the back of the cylinder, the back of the yoke, the inside of the extractor star and the bottom of the barrel on the flat. The inside of the sideplate should also be numbered to the gun. The number on the yoke is an assembly number and should also be on the left side of the grip frame. The back of the right grip panel may also be numbered. Yours sounds early and should be marked "GHS" on the left side of the frame, behind the top of the cylinder.

Colt placed their serial numbers in the frame cut under the barrel. The number on their butt was a separate Army number. I assume yours is a S&W.

Welcome to the Forum.

The serial number of your 1917 is 5xxx (the x's represent the three digits under the 5). This revolver should have smooth walnut grips that are dished at the top and a hammer with grooves on the sides.

That is an early one. I used the aforementioned link and found that serial numbers in the range 5000 to 5999 were made in December of 1917. (At least according to this source.)

Data from Pate suggest that the gun was delivered to the U.S. Government between 12/1/17 and 12/15/17.

Thanks

Thanks for the help guys. After reading your posts it does have the "ghs" in in circle on the sideplate and it also has the groved hammer and the dished grips.
