I'm curious as to how people stand on this. What are the dangers of the grips cracking or breaking under recoil? I've heard some people won't shoot their guns with the pearl grips on it. Anyone have any experience with them breaking under recoil?

I got an early DS with orig pearls. Showed it to my grip maker and he said - don't shoot it with the pearl grips on. He had a knowing, I'm gonna "I told you so" look in his eye.

Knew an FBI agt back in the late 60's early 70's

who had 2 off duty guns, matching blued S&W Chief's with black mother of pearl grips, and he was extremely proficient with them. His was the only pearl handled guns that I've handled, not counting antiques. I always wondered later how slick they'ld be with sweaty or bloody hands.

He also had a pet rabbit, and no 1 gave him heck about either the "pimp" pistols or the pet rabbit. & was a heck of a nice guy too.

I have always read that you should not shoot with your pearl grips. I had two pair of synthetic pearl grips shatter on two different Colt .45 autos. I'm sure it also has to do with recoil. Probably OK on your .22. Probably not OK on your .44 magnum with full house loads. The pearls I have are for .45 autos. I don't want to find out if the warnings are true.

I've only fired one of my guns with real pearls on it. A S&W first model HE. Only fired about 12 rounds but they were fine.
I did have fake Ajax MOP grips on a 1911 and they cracked. Maybe MOP is stronger than we think...

I've never shot my TL with the MOP grips. Have change to wood magnas to shoot it. But I have read that MOP gets kinda "sticky" with sweat, rather than slippery. If true, that's kinda neat, I think.

This reminds me of the whole Patton carried pearl handled revolvers thing

When asked by a reported about the pearl grips on his revolver general G.S. Patton is alleged to have stated, “only a New Orleans whore house pimp would carry a pearl handled pistol.”
