The One Line Address Pre-10
I'm looking for more information on these guns, as in how many exist and why.
This one is C 8583 with all matching numbers including the stocks. There is no indication that the gun ever went back to S&W and it appears to be completely original. I was going to bring this up reference SCSW4 but I was too late.
I have not seen another, but that does not mean anything. Comments?

I'm guessing the frame got stuck at the bottom of the parts bin for awhile before being pulled and assembled.

Oh no. Coming from the bottom of the parts bin couldn't carry a premium.

The one line address stamped guns completed/shipped early after the war are not unusual.
• The four line address block change order wasn't issued until April of 1948 containing the phrase "marcas registradas".
As always with S&W there is no clear cut off date or serial # for when the change took effect. There was a transition period while already one line marked older frame production was completed and shipped. Often frames with the 4 line hit the shipping dept before many with the one line address.
Your Mod 10 C series serial range also began in 1948 therefore on the 'cusp' so to speak. Fast moving models such as the Model 10, had shorter transition periods since inventory of frames did not sit in inventory long. So it stands to reason that fewer one line Mod 10s were produced.
Another contributing factor is that one line versions returned for re-finishing soon after the 4 line change order, were re-stamped w/the 4 line. This effectively modified their originality and Roy Jinks put a stop to it. Those guns so re-stamped will be obvious because of their re-finish date stamped on the left side of the grip frame.

Thank you Jim. Very informative. This one will stay with me mostly due to condition.

As a follow up I received Roy's letter on this one which shows it was shipped 14 July, 1948. That is shortly after the order to switch to the 4 line address. That just shows me that it is indeed a post war frame made before the order, and no more.

That one shipped about the time the 4-line address was being phased in, and it wouldn't be extraordinary that yours is a 1-liner. I have several listed which shipped in 6/48 which were and even one which shipped in 8/48. Also another shipped in 6/48 which had 4 lines.

Like all things S&W, I have an S serial numbered gun with the one line address that shipped a month after yours. Who knows when these frames were made.
