Even a non-expert like me figures such a low number was given to some VIP and if the current whereabouts is known it's likely in the collection of somebody not inclined to sell it and if it were offered for sale the price would be stunning.
So, who did get #3, anyway?

If I am not mistaken #3 went to Remington and I am not sure that it doesnt reside in the late Ray Cheely's collection.

It was converted to a Highway Patrolman circa 1979 and I now own it.

Nah, #3 is underneath the seat of my old pickup truck in the backyard. The one that's been setting there for the last ten years or so... I woulda moved it but it's rusted to the floorboard!

I'm pretty sure that #3, 4 and 5 are all together as a triple consecutive SN set.

According to an old article I have by Roy Jinks it states:
"The first .357 Magnum received by a non-celebrity was an 8 3/4-inch-barrel with registration number 3 was delivered to W.F Travers of Decatur, Illinois." HTH

I believe that Roy talked about this in Detroit. I believe he said the man in Decatur was the Chief of Police or the Sheriff. I am only 40 miles from Decatur and look for the RM every chance I get.

If your ever north of the 48th parrallel you are more than welcome to come have a beer and a visit with Reg # 36 8-3/4" if you are interested? The gunstore it was shipped to must have had a real good relationship with S&W to get such an early gun!! I always wonder how this gun ended up here in a remote part of Canada? If you are talking to Roy J, he has some detailed pictures I sent him for personal use. I hope your quest for these early RM's has some awnsers for you, take care Dale in Canada
