Default S&W Revolver Frame Sizes

There was a Forum post a week or so ago that discussed thoughts on how S&W arrived at their nomenclature for the various sizes of S&W revolver frames. For those of you who do not subscribe to Guns or American Handgunner magazine, here is an interesting article on the various frame sizes.

Typical gun magazine fluff. The article contains quite a few minor errors, like the reference to the ".44 Magnum L-frame." I did not see any explanation as to how the actual letter frame designations were selected, just a cursory discussion of the history and use of the various frame sizes.

That's a pretty good article about the lettered frame sizes and obviously wasn't intended as a comprehensive list, but limited to the blued steel version Hand Ejector swing out cyl models that were also offered in other materials, and the X and Z models

1. However, a little more research will reveal that the letter frame sizes (which originated in the S&W tool room) for current stainless steel versions of those blue models are different.
Stainless frame letter sizes in the SCSW 4th ed. page 21 at the top of the right hand column:

J = E
K =F
L =H
N =G

2. Also letter sizes are actually more complicated for the modern DA revolvers:
