Default What do I have here?

I originally posted this (along with a few others) in another forum section on this site, but having since been told this may fit into this section, here I am...

I'm trying to help my Aunt sell some of my late Uncle's gun collection - many S&Ws among them.

This is one of them...

What is it exactly and what would it possibly be worth in today's market?

Any information is greatly appreciated. I don't want my Aunt to take his collection to a gun shop and get ripped off, plus I'm pretty sure my Uncle would be furious if I let her do that.

Serial #148242

Very nice looking early .38 M&P. Great case hardening colors on the hammer!

Maybe 1920's, serial number would be helpful. It has the early large "mushroom" knurl nut on the ejector rod and no address line on the right side of the frame.

The medallion pearls are really nice!

Someone will be along shortly with a value.

Without the MADE IN USA on the frame, it would be earlier than 1922. My guess is that it was manufactured in the teens. The revoler would have been called a 38 Military & Police, or Model 1902. There were several changes, but without the serial number, can't determine which one. The medallion pearl stocks are very nice and may be worth as much as the gun. The gun with standard black hard rubber service stocks would be worth around $300 - $350. If the stocks were sold separately, they could go for as much as $300, since they look to be in perfect condition.

ADDED COMMENT. After looking closely at the revolver, I think the value could be higher even with standard service stocks - maybe over $400, since original finish looks to be at least 95%. If the gun was sold with the pearl stocks, I would be comfortable at $500.

Updated the OP with the serial #.

Any idea what year that would be?

Serial #148242 suggests 1910-11. Nice for its age,and apparently it has original factory MOP grips - those are definitely of great interest to many.
