Default Picked up an early 32-20 M&P

Been wanting a four inch 32-20 for awhile, was happy to pick up this early model with round butt and some smokin grips! Cant wait to get it to the range.Serial number 310XX, 1905 second change?

Paging Robert Johnson; paging Robert Johnson...

That is unbelievable cool. Who wouldn't love a century old RB K-frame with a four-inch barrel -- and particularly in that condition? Neal/Jinks would call it a 1905/First, but note there is no record of the serial numbers associated with the shift from first change to second change. In any event, it ought to date to around 1907, give or take a year.

Nice!

Isn't a four-inch .32.20 pretty loud?

Nice gun, though.

I like your gun - particularly the patent-date roll markings on the
right side of the barrel. Here is mine, about a year later. Refinished
by Dave Chicoine; grips recut by Keith Brown.

Thumbs up

Nice gun, and as usual, Keith did an excellent job on the grips.

Check out Roy Jinks book, chapter X, about the 2nd or 3rd page. Its the
table of K-frame serial numbers and variations, 1899 - 1940.

For the 32-20, 1905 1st change is 22,247 - 33,500 .
The 2nd change is 33,501 - 42,200 .

Pontiaker- your gun is likely a 1st change, but if you open it, post a pic of the rebound slid, AND a pic of the extractor.

Neal & Jinks left the change from 1905 to 1905-1st and to 1905-2nd very indefinite.
I wonder if time and research cured that, or if Roy just felt he could get closer after more observation.
I suspect there will be serial number mixing amongst them- overlap in other words.

Here is a 32/20 with the guts of a 1905-2nd, but it still has the extractor of a 1905-1st.

P:

The rebound slide is inside the lockwork. You have to remove the
sideplate. Its what returns the trigger, hence its name rebound slide.
It has a coil spring inside of it. If you know how to remove it, we'd
like to see its backside, and the area of the frame that it slides along.
The earlier ones had a keyway in the frame, and a 'key' on the backside
of the slide.

Note the rounded ends of the 'arms' of the extractor. That is a 1st change.
2nd change started using dowel pins to align the extractor, and the arms are flat on the end..

You don't even have to remove the slide. The 2nd change will have a "Pat'd" on it.

All this talk about the Smith&Wesson revolver...and none about a almost obsoleted cartridge...

If I had the power to make one old-time cartridge come back into vogue...it would have to be the 32-20. The .327 Federal is close on the ballistics....but not the cartridge. All that fanfare and hoopla a few years ago about the Ruger's being fitted to the .327, the single actions following suit...

And yet many, many years ago...this wonderful 32-20 was being used in Winchester rifles...and Colt and S&W handguns. One caliber for both rifle and revolver.....

Who'd of thunk?
