Early Model 28 ?
Found a shooter grade model 28 no dash with a 6" barrel at a local gun show. I have seen this gun around for a couple of gun shows and the price has gone from $450 up. I was ready to buy it with cash inhand (negociated lower price) last time but while doing the final exam it failed to rotate the cylinder on two chambers a couple of times. It also had what looked like pry marks at the lip of two chambers when the cylinder was examined. I passed. Another dealer now has it. It now rotates each chamber OK but I noticed that there is an assembly number on the inside (frame) of the yoke but the serial number of the gun is on the crane. Question is: should there be two assembly numbers on the yoke. Whats with the serial number S9xxxx being on the crane? I need an education. Gun looks about 90% finish with wrong grips.

Pry marks?
PASS go and do not collect $450 as you PASS.
The earliest Highway Patrolman is 1954 in the S113000 range. The S90,000 serial cannot be correct as this would be 1952 or 1953. See the butt for serial. Target stocks cover the number.
Something VERY wrong here.
You call it a Model 28. Is it actually stamped with the model number or is this what the seller calls it? That serial is way before model numbers were used.
See above. VERY wrong.

SP, I probably got the serial number wrong. The whole gun felt wrong, my question was: is there a case where the serial number would be on the yoke? It was marked 28 without a dash. I know that the two matching numbers are assembly numbers on anyother gun, but I was supprised to see what looked like a serial number with an S prefix. Its probably a parts gun but it caught my attention. If its at the next gun show I will take a very close look.

delta..Normally, the serial number will be stamped in the yoke cut over the MOD-28 and on the bottom of the grip frame (the serial number, S180000 or greater, will have an S prefix). The assembly number should be stamped on the yoke and on the left side of the grip frame (the two numbers should match).
