Default Registered Magnum Price

Yesterday I received a call from a local shop owner saying I have something you need to see. Went to shop he handed me a 7" RM in about 98% condition. All matching #'s (#486XX) (Reg #18XX), except the stocks are wrong serial #, they are diamond service stocks. No box or registration documents are included.

The seller will not put a price on the gun. Wants a quote.

Anyone have an idea what its worth?

hard to say without looking at it. if it's as nice as you say it is than the price would be $3000 to $6000. thats just throwing a number out there, without the correct number stock the price for me would be closer to $3000. MHO

get some pictures if you can, that will help...

I think that a 7" bbl is one of the less common barrel lengths. But I think I would rather let the dealer price then gun, then you can negotiate from there. It seems pretty obvious he has no idea what it is worth. I would not price it for him. Keep us posted as to how the deal goes.
RM's are always hot items. I would guess it is worth in the $4000 range. I am sure members more knowledgeable than I will respond.

I agree with 1911.
One of those situations that if you did price it,it would be considered way low, even if the seller had no idea.Let the seller price it,and it the deal stalls, endulge him a low offer but not ridiculous offer, maybe 1800 to stir the pot. He'll either negotiate in that range or put his real price on it.
Either way,it keeps the dance short.

Did you contact Roy Jinks to make sure it shipped as a 7"? If so, and if the finish is original and truly 98%, I'd say $4000 would be a good deal. Add the right grips and you'd have an RM with a fairly rare barrel length for under $5000.

You pretty much have the same resources the dealer does for researching the current value. Do your due diligence and hope he doesn't. Make use of his lack of effort to your benefit, but don't let emotions factor into your offer. It is just a piece of metal.

You might check out David Carroll's web site. He usually has some RM's there. I am not much of a hagler. If it is priced more than I want to pay, I just walk. Maybe he should price it instead of wanting you to "start the music".

If you offer 15K$ for it you will own it. If you offer 700$ for he will sputter and stutter and say he is insulted. He is not trying to sell it, he is looking for a buyer. There is a difference. If you have a serious interest in it, tell him. Give him time to research it and decide on a price. A 98% piece should look new, no wear, no tiny scratches, and original stocks.

The dollar difference between 98% and 95% is huge. You should do some research yourself to get a feel for what these sell for in various conditions. If I bought a 98% RM I would not shoot it and would not handle it much.

The truth is the price is what he and the buyer can agree on.

I'd tell the seller to hang his hat on it. I don't care for games on either side of the counter.

The seller's fishing. Let him set the price, he knows what he has into it.
Hope it works out for both of you.

I would offer him $1,500 for it and see what happens. It is his responsibility to put an asking price on the gun but since he asked, make an offer. If he does a "nutty" then ask him what he thinks its worth and then at least you will know what you are dealing with. Don't fail to mention that the non original stocks really kicks the collector value down.

I'd start low, the $1,500 price is a good place. You can offer more a lot faster than paying less. I'd also take a real close look at it and see if it is really a factory correct bbl, sights and such.

Value is based on original condition, missing a irreplaceable set of stocks is a good hit.

I am not fond of that tactic; however, I am fond of 7" RM's and I do love to negotiate. I would love to have a chance of sparring with the dealer over that 7"er. One of the things that I always remember in a purchase/sale negotiation, is that when you hold the cash, you control your own decision - no one can make that decision for you.

Here are a couple of photos of a 98% 7" RM:

Thanks to all for the insight. I spoke to Roy Jinks yesterday, he was at the SWCA in Tucson last week, and unavailable until Monday. He verified the registration number and the barrel at 7" originally shipped to Denver to sport shop. Now the fun begins will post if able to purchase.
