Model number and caliber would help.
You haven’t given us enough information to look it up

Appears to be a 1930s Military & Police Model with a 2" barrel. Unfortunately it has been poorly refinished. The nickel plated hammer and trigger are a sure sign of a refinish. If it was originally in nickel should have a letter N stamped on left side of grip frame. Very possible it was blue and plated. Grips are not original. The pre-war 2" guns are uncommon but not sure if there's any collector value with the refinish. Still a cool gun to shoot and play with.

Looks like it will predate model numbers. Could be quite early. Pictures of the serial number on the butt, inside the ejector shroud, and face of the cylinder could help. You're definitely in the right place for answers.

Even with the refinish, I'd make that deal in a hearbeat. The refinish may not have been done to to factory standards but it appears to be holding up OK, and the markings aren't polished off the gun.
A PT111 is just another plastic fantastic and can be had anywhere any day for about $200. That old 2" pre-10 Smith appeals to me much more. I think you did just fine.

Thank you he has had it for a long time. I also picked my dads old model 49 that is in great shape. I have the original grips for it though.

I believe the 608-- is the correct serial range for an early 2" M&P from around 1930 or a bit later. In original condition it would be worth quite a bit, since they didn't make a lot.
But no point crying over a camel's broken back, or whatever. Still a rare gun, even in this guise. And a bargain. It is what it is.

The 49 also looks interesting, although it is sorely in need of it's original stocks, at least for portraits. The nickel on the M&P would probably clean up a lot with a light, light polishing with Flitz followed by an application of RenWax.

Welcome to the forums from the Wiregrass, Slipman! Look under the barrel for the SN stamped there. Is it the same as on the butt and the face of the cylinder? IIRC, S&W didn't produce a 2" M&P until 1933. The small cartouche was used until 1935-36, I believe. Those stocks appear to be a bit long and are probably for an N frame. You really need some for a round butt K frame.

Welcome aboard from Wyoming.
Nice grab.
It was built to shoot. With the collector value diminished by the refinish it would make a great shooter -- just some standard .38 wadcutters or round nosed lead ammo would be perfect. Same for the 49.
Congrats.

Most likely shipped Apr/May time frame 1935. Very common gun, nice family heirloom. Just don't shoot anything other than standard .38 special loads in it. Not meant for anything stronger.

Welcome to the Forum.
By any chance, was there a "B" in front of the serial number that is stamped under the barrel? If so, this revolver shipped with a blue finish.
"Very common gun..."
Original 2" M&Ps from before WW II are not very common.

Looks like it left the factory with a nickel finish. It's a shame it was refinished. It was a decent job though. I've seen much worse.

Nice!,
As stated a light rub with some Flitz or Mothers mag polish will do that finish wonders.

Welcome to the S&W Forum from Pennsylvania!
Both of those pieces are very pleasing to me.
You are double blessed with the 49, as it belonged to your father.
Enjoy both of them. As you have likely noticed, the older one is creating some interest, as the chances are that it is not a very common piece.
It will be interesting to see what other opinions are offered up.
Again, welcome aboard.
