Smile Model of 1917

Guys: I have a friend who does estate sales and antiques. He tipped me off about this one, which was with three other handguns----Early Commercial 1920's Luger, Astra 400, and an Argentine 1905 Mannlicher.

I bought them all. The '17 is 23,000 serial range, inspected/accepted by GHS, seems to be original with a very nice bore and the charge holes are almost new, with no pitting or wear.
The S&W numbers, both sets are matching, and it was full of dried grease and apparently not shot a lot since 1918. It took a while to clean up the varnished grease, and check the action, which is fine. This is first one lately with the dull finish that I have encountered, a few have turned up here with commercial quality blue and very low serial numbers, but this one was cheap, and available, unlike the others.

What do you guys think about this find?

Dale

Very nice, thanks for posting. I’d love to get in on a deal like that.

The 1917 had a commercial blue finish, not the shiniest blue finish S&W used in that period, but shinier than the gun in the photos. The photos are too small and too blurry to give an evaluation of the finish, but it doesn't appear to look like what the original finish looked like even accounting for wear and age. And for the finish to be that dull from wear/age there should be some worn spots like at the sides of the muzzle.

Have you checked the grips for a penciled serial number?

I believe some of the 1917s were refinished at the Army Arsenals when being reworked. Some are parkerized. The 1917s were a two war pistol with significant numbers used in WW2.

Can’t tell much from the pictures, but it looks like a very nice one.
Unlike pianos they seem to hold their value. 😁
I know I’m still looking for a nice one, they seem to be hard to find in nice condition…that I can afford.

The Astra 400 and Argentine 1905 Mannlicher got my mouth watering. Was the crest ground off the 1905? Unique automatics. Planning on shooting my two .455 Smiths tomorrow at our club’s BAM match. But ones in .45colt and the other is .45 Schofield.

GHS is stamped thru the finish, and it is not refinished, I detail stripped it and the finish is as it should be. No buffing or incorrect parts that are blued...

The Argy 05 has the crest ground, like 99% of them...but minty bore.

Does the Astra 400 have the Nazi proof marks? Can we see a picture of that handgun? Thanks in advance.

If you could post some clearer pictures of the 1917 that would help us.
