Default Pulled the side plate on my 4th change .....

Is there supposed to be a hammer block in there? If so I'll get one. It's m&p model of 1905 4th change.

It should be the older type built into the sideplate. Look at the sideplate and see if you do not find a blocking device built into the channel in the plate.

Never mind. I just didn't read far enough. No modern hammer block until December 1944. 20 plus years after mine was made.

How 'bout we say they thought it was safe for six at the time? Then they thought different. Maybe it wasn't as safe as they thought. Maybe the new and improved version cost less to make. Maybe---maybe---maybe

I can make up all sorts of questions---correct answers come harder.

Try not to drop it.

Ralph Tremaine

And having now had a look at the excellent pictures, one correct answer is the new one for damn sure costs less---and would appear to be more effective---no matter what----the best of both worlds. On the other hand, the new one can be left out---so we have to rethink that "no matter what" comment. This isn't as easy as it looks, is it?

Bobby,

Your 4th change is from the early 1920s, since you say it's 20 plus years earlier than Dec 1944 when the 3rd style hammer block safety, the "sliding bar" was introduced.

If yours has the Dec 29, '14 patent date on the barrel, it should have either the 1st or 2nd style side plate mounted safety, both shown in post #14 here:
M&P Hammer Safety Dilemma: I was correct

If yours doesn't have the patent date of '14, which means your gun is from early 1915 or even before, it will have neither style.

By 1926 all K frame models had received the 2nd style hammer block leaf spring safety by December. There is no new patent date for this style which Shawn shows in his post above.

If you have a malfunctioning cyl hand, you should have the 1st style safety which, if missing, isn't providing the spring tension for the hand. The 2nd Style has the hand spring in the trigger and will function properly with a missing safety.

It has the hand spring on the side plate. I didn't realize that was also a hammer block. It functions fine. Thanks all for the clarification.
