Show off your M & P revolvers (pre-10's)
Time to show off the workhorse of the Smith line up. The Military & Police (pre-Model 10) revolvers.
This is my late 1940's .38 special
This is my .32-20 with the classic Wondersight, deadly accurate on this gun.

You may get an argument from some about whether the phrase "Pre-10" should be restricted to short-action revolvers, but I like the idea of a classic M&P thread. Here's my "pre-10." which is so old it is even a "pre-1905" -- a 1902/First change from 1904 that I am really fond of, even though I have other long-action M&Ps that have more pronounced look-at-me qualities.

Here's my 4 screw from around 1958
And here's my 5 inch from around 1925. It has correct stocks on it now but haven't taken a picture of it yet.

Pre-War Guessing about 1921-1922
Picked this one up at the local gunshow last week. It looks as good as the day it rolled out of the factory. All #'s matching. Looks to have been fired very little if at all. Could'nt believe how clean it was. Would you shoot it , or should it go to a collector?? I sure feel the urge to shoot it. Am I close on the date?
Twig.

That's how I'd date it. Very nice revolver.
I think I would probably shoot it in the expectation that I would be keeping such a nice specimen. But if you think you might turn it to a collector as "possiby unfired" for a little more than you paid, why not do it? Then you could buy one almost as nice for recreational shooting.

Just imagine if these fine pre model 10's could talk, wouldnt that be a heck of a campfire story listening about the history of these revolvers?

Just one . . . that I got recently (I always said I wasn't interested in the "older" ones before the model numbers were introduced). I think my addiction just got worse! LOL
This one seems to be about a year older than me. In other words, "born" in 1950 . . .

I love those round butt 6" and 6.5" M&P's........probably one of the best looking revolvers ever made! I have to make it my business to get my hands on one of those , even if it means selling some more rifles!

Here are a couple of early post-war "S" prefix M&P's. Both have the long action, single line address, and large ejector rod heads.

I have shown this before but...
Its a 1946 vintage carried by a NYC PD officer. Early post war gun, has finish issues but has lots of cool factor.
Serial SV 8127xx

My 2" M&P, which is the coolest gun ever.
going by the serial number, I think it is in the 1949 range, more or less
It has a number lightly written on the barrel with an electric pencil. I had figured it was some police inventory number. One person on this board some time ago told me it looked like a case file number.

Just brought one home tonight. My first gun ever was a M&P. I never should have traded it in when I was ready to upgrade to .357.
This one sort of scratches that old itch: Well I did it. [updated with pics]

Here's my M&P's
Here's my family of .38 special M&P's. A couple of pre-10's, a pair of 4th changers (one in nickel and one of the Boston PD), and an army-navy. I love them all.

Two more from the safe
In addition to the 1902/First that I posted above, let me offer for consideration these two more recent M&Ps:
A five inch from 1927 with its box:
And this S-prefix (long-throw hammer) snub from early 1947:
It took me a while to get over my "just plain vanilla" attitude toward M&Ps, but now I like and respect them as much as any of the less common S&W models. If they weren't such fine and reliable pieces of machinery, there never would have been so many of them made, right?

I have a 5" from the 40's
This gun was the partner to my dad's Official Police Colt;
These are both mint in box, although they were carried briefly in the 40's and 50"s.

Whoa! So that's what they looked like stinking new. So very nice!
AirCommando, could you post the first three digits of the serial number. I'm trying to pin a couple of mine down. They could all be siblings for all we know.
I also notice that yours still features the half-moon front sight. The one I've got is ramped. Of course it may be a little later than I think it is. I'm wondering when the ramp began supplanting the half-moon.

OK-I'm going in. Here's one from '53:
A nice 6" transition, probably 99%:
And a couple of pre-war 5" shooters:
I know, I know, but it's pre-war and sort-of "fits in". Colt HB OP 6", 1940. 98-99% original finish:

Thanks;
Pretty near kin! Yours is 375 numerals lower than my 2-inch. Wonder if they stayed up late talking and giggling after the light was turned off.
My other 4-inch with the ramp sight is 322XXX. I already forgot the rest of the digits though I just got it out to look at it. Looks like the switch-over to ramp from the half-moon occurred sometime during the low C 300000 range.
