10-22-2010 Was a very good day(More Pics Added)
I was lucky enough to purchase 7 S&W's from one of our member's, Let me first say that i almost screwed this up big time. We went back and forth on price and how many i wanted, i upset this very fine gentilman and almost lost out on these wonderful revolvers. After pulling my head out of you know where we made the deal.
My good friend Craig went with me and the old GPS toke us right to his house. Now I had made the deal to buy 3 gun's, after looking at them he asked if we would like to see the other 4. While looking at the other 4 I just know had to have the other 4.
We finished our business and had a very nice conversation, i would like to thank him again for welcoming us to his home and for just being a good gun guy. Thanks again LC
Pre model 20 6 1/2" barrel S142123
1917 Commercial Serial number 173194
Pre War Heavy Duty Serial number 51409
Here are the other 4. Thanks for looking...
38/44 Outdoorsman's, Serial number's S78443 and S146431. The earlyer one has a duller finish than the other.
K22 Outdoorsman Serial number 644676

Three beauties! I am particularly envious of the 6.5" postwar Heavy Duty.
A good day indeed.
Can we see the other four?

That commercial 1917 is a gem. All the commercials I've seen are in much worse condition. Congrats on all of them.

George, just noticed the serial number on your 1917. I have 173159. It was put together and shipped as part of the second Brazilian contract in 1946.
I realize that nearby serial numbers don't necessarily convey useful information in S&W studies, but I thought I'd mention this in case you wanted to play the numbers game. Mine's a round-top frame, which I believe indicates production before 1926. Looks like yours is too. I'd be interested in knowing when it shipped, if you determine that information and care to report it.
In addition to the Brazilian crest on the sideplate, mine differs from yours in the orientation of the serial number (stamped to be read with the barrel pointing left) and the location of the company logo (stamped on mine so it lies mostly to the right of the hammer stud rather than to the left).

Nor did I think otherwise. The point I was trying to make is that since the company had so many unused 1920s parts left over, and since those were used in the second Brazilian contract, they might have made up a few commercial 1917s at the same time they were going through the old parts for the contract order.
It's probably a question of when the frames were numbered and when they were pulled for assembly. I'd still be interested to hear when yours was shipped if you get that date. It remains possible (maybe even probable) that your commercial 1917 was assembled and shipped in the 1920s, and that frames with nearby serial numbers were simply not pulled and used in second-contract Brazilian guns until 20+ years later.
EDITED TWO HOURS LATER: I'll address my own speculation. After some research, I find that the only commercial 1917s assembled after WW2 were in the 209000-210000 range. Though a few commercial 1917s were shipped during the 1930s, I would bet they were taken out of inventory, not assembled for immediate shipment. There were commercial 1917s shipped during the 'teens and '20s, with all serial numbers above 160000 coming from the '20s. So I would bet your gun was also assembled and shipped in the 1920s; the fact that some commercials (like yours) and some second-contract Brazilians (like mine) have nearby serial numbers is just a fluke.

Boy the other 4 are just as nice as the 1st 3, I can understand your not letting them go anywhere else. I am afraid I would have had to do the same thing. Congratulations on a Fantastic day!!!!

1Aspenhill, I just noticed your avatar--caught my attention as I live in Overland Park.
I got my 38/44 HD from Rich Stovall, back in his drinking days when I think that he may have had a few. Walked in the Bullet Hole and saw it there. Asked Rich what he wanted and about dislocated my shoulder reaching for me billfold.
