Question Questions about older chief's special

I have a gentleman wanting to buy/trade me out of my 642-2TALO. He has what he claims is about a 1957 Chief's Special in blue with wood stocks. My question is, was the Chief's Special even produced in that era? If not, what might he have and what might it be worth on a trade? Let's assume 90-95% gun. (He claims excellent, too pretty to carry.) I know this is all theoretical since we can't know for sure which revolver it is, but hand-grenade close is close enough for me.

I do not want to steal this gun, but I am very new to S&W wheel guns and I don't want to get ripped off. He says it isn't rated for +p. (If that helps?) I picked up a very nice 12-2 for 370.00 about two weeks ago, and this forum seemed to think I did okay on that deal. But two deals in two weeks is pushing my luck. I'm not sure what he has, but I don't want to go into the deal totally clueless.

Any information would be appreciated, and if somebody has a picture of what this thing "should" look like that would be above and beyond.

Thanks in advance.

The Chiefs Special was introduced in 1950. Value will be hard to pin down without seeing it or good photos of it, and knowing what else (if anything) comes with it, like a box, and features like the original stocks. Assuming it looks as nice as he says but has been shot, $300-$500 is reasonable.

It depends on your motivation for trading. If you are trading for another carry gun, your 642 would be a better choice. If you are looking for a collector gun, I think the current value of the Chiefs Special (even in 95%, but no box or contents) is probably a little lower than your gun, so I wouldn't consider it an even trade.

Thank you for the replies. No, I wouldn't be using it for carry, I'm all set on that front. The 642 was just not what I was hoping for, and this guy is looking for a carry piece. It sounds like maybe a plus cash kind of deal. If I end up with it I'll post some pics on here for you. Thanks again for the assistance.
