Default My new pre 29

I picked up this 1957 4 screw pre 29. It is in good original condition sporting the original finish and un-numbered cokes. The gun has had a scope mounted on it and holes are visible in the top strap as shown. I have $1150 in the gun and am happy with it, being my first pre 29 and one I can shoot and enjoy guilt free. As you all know these aren't exactly easy to find.. What do you guys think? I'm curious as to how much the holes in the top strap affect value? Opinions on that? Thanks in advance I can't wait to get this one dirty!

You did good and as for the extra holes......who cares! You bought it to shoot right!?
But seriously, it's a decent condition pre-29 that is an honest working gun. The good news is that the holes are very inconspicuous. Yes, it does count against it as far as value, but I would not think it would be a big deduction.
ENJOY THE NEW TOY!!!

With 1970s guns going for $1000 or more I think you did awesome. I've never stumbled across a pre-Dirty Harry 29-2 much less a pre model number one. Before it was the handgun everyone had to have, it was the one few wanted...

Let's say the stocks are nice and worth a third of the price. That means you got a nice pre 29 shooter for around $750. I think you did just fine, even with the extra holes.

I would have bought it with the holes. Yes value would be lessened, however you got a great deal on that one.

Not so much value as it is if you can live with the holes. I traded for a nice early 29-2 that from all outward appearances was about a 96%+ gun. Nice enough to be collectable, but not so nice I couldnt shoot it without worry. It was a laser for sure in that aspect. It was after I shot it and went to clean it that I discovered the holes . Now in the grand scheme of things it was an early gun, shot like a 1955 Target, and I didn't have all that much in it, BUT I cringed every time I saw those holes and traded it off.

Red ramp looks original. Deduct $100 per hole. You did great.

Bought a M29 on GB years ago, same holes and missing rear sight. It went for pretty cheap. I put a sight on it, shot it alot, took one of my best deer with it. Sold it to buy a M629.
Enjoy!

On the bright side, if you ever decide to mount a scope, you have saved some gunsmithing expense. The Cokes make it worth close to what you paid.

Glad it passed the smell test! I actually had to repair this and it is NOT original My new pre 29 Followed some instructions I found on this site. Cost me $8 to fix! I sliced up an old credit card and covered it with ren wax then clamped with alligator clamps.. mixed the epoxy and tinted it red. Dabbed in with toothpick and trimmed with a razor... Go ahead and call me Bubba it's all good

I do have the scope and mount. I plan to use it in a similar fashion!

Great gun. Don't think of how much the holes take away from the value, think of how much they saved you. Have fun with that one.

I think Brownell's sell a little kit for making front sight colored inserts pretty much the same way as you did - colored epoxy or maybe some other type of curable plastic.
