Default 17-1 worth a look?

I remembered reading about them in the "bible" but it had been awhile, then one turned up recently, the only real difference being the reversed threads on the extractor rod, then the 17-2 deleted the trigger guard screw.

I found one in the $700 range, probably good to very good.

How "scarce" are they really? Serial # puts it @ 1960.

If nothing else, another dandy .22 to take to the range!

Thanks

I had one, but have never seen another. The fellow I sold it to sent off for a Jinks letter but was told it didn’t exist. The theory was sometimes pre-GCA1968 important visitors on tours would be given a gun “off the books”.

In these parts almost any 17-1 would bring $700.

That's an interesting philosophy, if I did have at least one of "everything" let's say S&W revolver wise, how many guns would I have?

There are not a lot of 17-1s for sale where I shop. I'd buy a nice one for $700 as soon as I saw it. I've got ten or so 17s/pre-17s and not one is a -1. Don't think I've ever seen one for sale locally. Good luck.

Any comparable Mod 17 should be worth $700. As most say, "you can't have just one".

17's are nice,, but, for me, the 617 is nicer,,
I do not "BABY" my handguns,, and finish damage is a constant concern with a 17,,, for me.

I had a High Standard Supermatic as a first 22 pistol,,
After about 3 years, that gun showed the wear I put on it.

I bought a 17-4, and was afraid to toss it on the seat of the truck,,
I sold it.

I have a couple 617's for "EVERY DAY USE",, (a "No Dash", and a 10 holer)
they show zero wear.

I will buy a 17 at a good price, I have an 18,, but, they get treated with kidd gloves,,

I was fortunate to find a 17-1 last year at a gun shop. It was a $800 out the door price. Maybe more than some folks would give but I figure seeing another was a slim chance. The diamond targets are worth a few bucks by themselves. Here it is pictured with a clean pre-17.

Nothing wrong with having two 17s and an 18!

Default Thanks everyone.....

You crazy enablers!

I made a deal on the 17-1 and he also had a late 22/32 that is coming along as well and he says he has a "real" Bekeart he is going to send me pics of.....

I'll post more pics when they arrive and are buffed up.

I need a drink....

Looks like a bit of holster wear on the front of the barrel. Likely it will be a tack driver. Mine's a later dash number but it isn't going anywhere.

You can always make more money, but they’re not making more classic Smiths.

Right? But if not for non petroleum based social lubricant, 1/2 my collection would belong to someone else.

In 2016 I came across locally, a 17-1, its what got me into S&Ws. It was in ANIB condition, matching serial #s on the grips and original box w/tools. Like new. Well, I sold I it against the advise of many members here on the forum. They were right now I regret selling it. Got $1000 for it in 2018, that before all the values spiked. I've only seen one other 17-1 since 2016. So IMHO you got a very good deal on one that doesn't come around very often.
