Transitional Post-War N-frame grips
Anyone seen a box of old post-war transitional N-frame grips at their local dealer? Drop me a PM if you come across a set that is available !
Here are a couple photos to show the distinct “shelf” on the high-horn style N-frame magnas typical of the early post-war era.

Jerry, I'm in the same boat. Still haven't found any after 18 months of searching for a pair for my 4 inch transitional HD I picked up in California. Although it did have some nice old diamond N frame targets but I sold those off right away. I'll make a deal with you, if I find more than one than I will let you know if you promise to do the same. Now don't get greedy on me.

Those are hard to find, and I know because I have been looking too. Seems like the sharp-shoulder K-frame magnas can be located from time to time, but the N-frame equivalents are rare rare rare. (Or in one case where I found a set but declined to buy, unaffordable.)

David & Daniel:
They do tend to be expensive because of their rarity on the market but I would be willing to go as high as $30 or maybe even $40 for a really nice set !
I have only found two pretty sets in the last two years.

Call Keith Brown....but I think your $30-40-45 offers might only be a tiny down payment!
What you're seeing in availability is those of us who have the guns with shoes on them are a bit leery of separating them. Go figure. And those who have the guns without clothes are kind of desperate for them.
Couple that with the 10-12 thousand transition N frames produced, makes them just a bit hard to locate. Compare that to the couple of hundred thousand K frame guns from the same period, you understand the reason we see some K's out and about.
There are also greedy collectors who maintain woodpiles, just in case. Its fair to surmise that over the next 10 years we're all going to find an N that could benefit from a set of these. Start your search now, even if you don't need them. And it also goes for prewar Ns, too!

In my travels at work I cover a huge area, always making the rounds of pawn shops and small gun shops, I'll keep my eyes peeled for these. I think the 'shelf' you are referring to is on the top of the stock? Not a rounded form but flater, correct?
One more fact to file away.

Just to clarify. Are there two types of early post war high horn grips? One that are the standard length and one type that are longer for the transitional guns?

RD:
Yes, there is a distinct "flat" at the top of the horn and a pronounced break in slope from that "flat" to the side of the grip. This forms a line as seen in the second photo. Later forms are rounded from top to side.

Yes.
But it is worse that you think-
I discovered this thru trial and error when trying to put Transitional grips on Transitional guns-
SOME Transition guns are LONG framed like Pre-War guns, and SOME Transition guns are not!

I have personally found Lee's observation to be true when trying to put transitional grips from what appeared to be early transitional .38/44 Heavy Duties (based on serial numbers) on my later transitional Outdoorsman.

Beautiful guns GLL, I would rather refer to this style as a sharp horn rather than high horn since I was brought up to believe high horns were only on J frames! The length difference in the N transitional grips is usually 1/32 inch but can vary a few thou one way or the other. The transitional Outdoorsman is almost my grail gun (needs to be a .44 special for that) and I sure wouldn't mind seeing the Outdoorsman family picture again if you have the time.

Keith:
I also have a soft spot in my heart for transitional Outdoorsman !
Here is the old photo of my transitional guns I think you were referring to. The "family" has grown a bit since it was taken but I have not made a new group photo.
Thank you again for all of the fantastic grips you have made for me ! I "need" another Pre-War magna style set and will send you the large medallions for your opinion !
Best Regards,
Jerry

Jerry,
Well, that just isn't fair. Now I know where all the grips went.
Looking through those 22 revolvers you can see many variations of grips. I am going to volunteer you to make us an album of just N frame magnas wth all the possibe variations. Can't wait to see that.

I saw some sell on e-bay about 2 hours ago. I didn't bid because of a small chip on one of the top horns. Just small enough to not be noticeable but large enough to bug me at over $100. Although, they had the serial number of 76,xxx. Can't remember the rest but I would venture to guess that the bidders thought these could potentially be transitional grips. Is it possible with that serial number stamped on them since that is outside the range of transitional guns?

Oh Yea, That's it, I love that picture! I'll end up with a transitional sooner or later. Thanks Jerry, feel free to send me the medallions whenever you would like. I think with the transitional grips the front strap area is a bit more swept back and the top of the grip where it lays in the web of the hand is more rounded even though the sharp edge might make you think otherwise just by looking at them, a much more comfortable magna than the later ones.
