Smith .38 Outdoorsman Rear sight
I am looking at a post WWII Outdoorsman, the gun is a shooter, there is a pitting spot on the left side of the barrel, but the bore is mint, and the action is tight as a bank vault, but the rear sight on the gun, is checkered just like a Model 27. I have never had one of these, is this going to be a problem with sighting this gun in? The blade is there and present, but were there any differences that I should look out for. The gun is a sweetheart, and I think for $400, even with that problem, I think I can't pass it up.

I wouldn't see how the checkering on the upper surface of the rear sight base would affect anything except cosmetics.
For $400 as described I would jump on it. It may even be a transitional model.

No the rear sight is complete, it just appears to be that of a Model 27 or pre-27. It has the full checkering the same way. The full assembly is there, blade and all, it just doesn't look like it was original to the gun.

First, buy the gun. Don't be a fool, its so cheap it would be crazy not to.
Then give us the serial number. We don't really need all the digits, but the "S" and the 60,000s or 70,000s would be a great help. Let me guess, its a S71,000s gun? I only guessed that because a lot of very interesting guns appear in that thousand guns....
A lot of the early outdoorsman examples (a lot being more than 10 or 20) had RM barrels.
Then send us a photo of the rear sight and other goodies.
