Default 38/44 PRE-WAR HEAVY DUTY BOX

Shoot! I bought this heavy duty box for one of my two early service grip hd's and never took a good look at the revolver shown on the box.It shows a hd wearing magna grips. If you have hd serial number 57576 I have your box.

I believe I recall it being mentioned that at least the finish is sometimes represented on the box and maybe the barrel length as well. Can anyone verify or show a picture of how the box might be labeled or marked, if it is? Thanks.

Nope.
I believe you are thinking of the post-war Gold boxes. They always have the barrel length and finish printed on the ends.

The pre-war blue and red "Picture Boxes" are not printed beyond the model name. It is the same with all the pre-war "Picture Boxes"- the HD's, the Reg Mag's (and Non-Reg's), the OD's in 22 and 38, and the K-22 Masterpiece. Just the model name and the pictures on top.

The serial numbers on these boxes is written on a piece of white paper tape glued on the bottom, usually on one end, but occasionally in the center (probably because Sally was sick that day, and Joe filled in). Since the Reg Mags varied in barrel length so much, the length is occasionally written on the tape with the serial number. I won't say you will never find a grease pencil notation of some special feature on the end or bottom of a picture box, but I don't recall seeing one. For example, pre-war NICKEL Heavy Duties are very rare, special order guns, and it would not surprise me if the end or bottoms had "Nickel" written in grease pencil, or had a paper label saying "Nickel" glued on.

My gun and grips match. I only meant I have a HD with original magnas. My gun does NOT match your box. It is # 55499.

Here is an example of a Blue Picture Box for a Nickel gun that is marked on the strip of tape as being a nickel gun and the serial number.

Any verdict yet Bill? I never really gave it any thought, but I'd kinda think maybe the HD's made before magnas came along would've shipped in the plain maroon (burgundy) boxes - and that all the 'picture boxes' had the pic of the gun with magnas....

Thanks for the clarification Lee. And what Bill is picturing is what I was thinking of. It seems that in very rare occassions the box can sometimes be numbered with certain information about the gun but it is not the rule, from what I am hearing and seeing.

Mark,
I believe that HDs and 38/44 Outdoorsman had Blue Picture Boxes in 1931-32. The first ones had pictures of HDs with service grips on it.
Daniel,
Blued guns only had their serial numbers on the tape. I would imagine the .45 Colt guns had caliber on them.

Hold on here. Am I missing something in this discussion. I agree that RMs didn't have the length printed on the blue picture boxes, but there were 3 different sizes produced. If you had a long barrel, it came in a long box. If you had an intermediate length, it came in the mid size box. And if you had a short one, it came in the short box. I've never heard of or seen one in an "inappropriate" size box. We've also seen the maroon hinge top boxes in different sizes. I had a triple lock in a 4" nickel box, as identified by the end label. I've seen a 6 1/2" gun/box, too. Same for 2nd models and 3rds.

Are we talking about the same thing?

We are talking about Picture Boxes.
That would be a box with a picture on it (PICKSHER in Ky ).
The pic is of a gun.
The Pic boxes show the gun, name the model, but have no printing for the length or color.
Take your Geritol today?

OK. The pichser box for RMs still came in 3 different sizes. Small, medium, and large. Kind of like wimmens. No, they didn't have the length printed on them, but they were clearly different sizes. They were different boxes for different barrel lengths.

The earlier boxes, and specifically the hinged ones usually had the printed end labels. They were also different lengths.

If someone wants to search lowhog’s posts you may find that he bought something from someone and they may be able to find some info to contact him assuming they’re willing to share that info.
