Wow that is a great find, do you think the factory plugged the hole? How did they plug it?

Gary
What is that # 14812 on the bottom of the box ? Is it the
assembly number on the frame ?

It is not the assembly number, I would guess it may have been an inventory number that the store put on it since it is next to the price. The pencilled serial number is at the other end of the box. Have you see the MADE IN USA stamp?

If that were any sweeter I'd need insulin injections just to look at it.
Great score!

Gary, Both my 5 inch and 6 inch guns have the "MADE IN THE UNITED STATES OF AMERICA" stamped on the bottom of their their boxes. Both guns are in the two piece, maroon style box like yours. The factory must have done this for a short time after the war until they started using the gold boxes. I just looked on the bottom of a 1939 M&P dispay type box and the stamping is not there. We were a proud country post WWII. Hope this helps.

I wonder if any of the early gold picture boxes had that stamp, my later 46 box does not, s 855936, must have been just the early maroon post war boxes that did, very nice gun.

The grove around the checkering is deeper on those stocks than I've ever seen.

I don't have any easy access to maroon boxes, to see if they have
that stamp. From the others comments, it looks to have been
something of the period.

You were going to post a picture of that 1899 with the extractor

Nice gun. This was at the Zettlemeyer Auction at Fogelsville, PA with some other interesting S&W's including a 25-2 6 1/2 " in presentation box with tools which went for $575. Several more .38s and a .32 in fair shape which went for $125.

The box for my SV 771xxx has that made in USA stamp.
It has the same price penciled on the bottom, also.

$550 out the door at the auction. That was a $500 bid plus 10% buyer's premium
