Presentation Victory Models
It has been stated there were no presentaton Victory Models. That is not correct. I have records of eight Victory models that were manufactured as presentation guns, and ten presentations, so for the benefit of Forum members here that are interested in Victory Model information, these are the eightguns:
(1) Serial number 1,000,000 (the last of the Pre-Victory Models).
(2) Serial numbers V1 through V5.
(3) Serial number V653083.
(4) Serial number 0775885.
Serial number one million and serials V1 through V5 are high polish carbonia bright blue finish, 4 in. barrels, .38 Special caliber. with
fancy grained smooth walnut stocks. I have personally examinded V1 and V5. V1 is cased in a fancy walnut compartmented case with a "Harry S. Truman" on the lid. The story of V1 can be read in Vol 33, No. 3, S&WCA Journal, Winter 1999. Serial number 0775885 is a caliber .38/200, 5 in. barrel, Pre-Victory Model with a zero added as a prefix to the original serial number, and presented to Lord Inverchapel, British Ambassador to the US, Wash. DC, presented 4/16/47 by Carl Hellstrom. Serial number V1 was presented twice, first on Dec. 12. 1942 to Lt. Gen. William Knudsen and later on July 22,1947, to President Harry S. Truman. Collectors are split on whether there were two guns with serial number V1, or whether the Knudsen gun was returned to S&W after WW2 and rebuilt for presentation the Pres. Truman. I am currently researching that issue. The remaining presentation Victory is serial number V653083. It was presented to Carl Hellstrom as the one millionth gun produced in WW2. Hellstrom later presented it to Springfield Ordnance on Oct. 12, 1949. There maybe other presentation Victory Models, or Pre-Victorys, not yet documented, as S&W and Carl Hellstrom presented many types of S&W firearms to VIPs. Ed.
