S&W CTG or CTC`
Hi there:
My father in law is giving us his father's old S&W revolver.
Was wondering if anyone can tell me a bit about it- the year, model and value if possible. We are not interested in selling, but would like to get info. Serial # is 55351.
Thanks!

You have a 38 Double Action Perfected model. It is the only S&W that has both the Top Break, and the Hand ejector thumb release. It is in 38 S&W,(not 38 Special). It is fitted with hard rubber extended target grips, not normally original to this model. They were manufactured from 1909 to 1920 with S/N range 1 to 59,400. Your S/N would probably put in in the later years, around around 1918 - 1919. From what I can see it would appear to be in the VG to Fine condition, with a value between about $235 to $275.
A nice unusual piece, and still viable as a defensive weapon, but be sure to have it checked by a qualified gunsmith before trying to fire it.

That's a .38 Double Action Perfected, the last major design modification of S&W's top-break line of revolvers. It probably shipped about 1917. It incorporates features that were used in the hand-ejector design, which utilized a swing-out cylinder.
I'm not in the know about value on this variety. People looking for a shooter would not ordinarily pursue one of these, so their primary appeal is to collectors. Maybe $300? You will hear from others with better awareness.
The barrel stamping shuld read "38 S&W CTG" (for cartridge).
Oops, my forum colleague got there first. At least we kind of agree!

The logo on those grips looks like the H&R target, although the gun is clearly a S&W Perfected.

I'll take a whack at it.
It has H&R grips - that target pattern with the bullet holes. But I only know of one gun that was both a top break and had a side latch. That was the S&W Perfected. So I'm guessing someone has put H&R target grips on a Perfected.
They made 59,400 between 1909 and 1920. That's CTG, by the way. Cartridge.
