I recently aquired what seems to be a S&W model 31. I am not sure what year and wondered if someone might know. It isnt in the best of shape and it was carried often.
It has dates all the way around the cylinder,
May 21, 95
July 16, 96
March 27, 94
May 29, 94
July 1, 84
April 9, 89
The cylinder catch is on top with the sight and moves up and down as it advances.
And the serial number is 413 on the butt.
I will get some photos up soon maybe someone can help me out.
Well, it is not a Model 31, although the Model 31 is a direct descendant of this gun. What you have is a .32 Hand Ejector First Model Double Action.
With a 3 digit serial number, it is almost certainly a first year of issue gun (1896).
This was S&W's first hand ejector revolver. It precedes the guns with the thumb release on the left side.
It also has the cylinder stop in the top strap.
These are very interesting guns and not commonly seen.
