First year Highway Patrolman.
It's the same old story, but I couldn't say no to this first year production Highway Patrolman. I am becoming concerned that I can't just ignore S&W's with diamond grips and five screws. Do I need counciling?

Yes you do! But seriously, I do not think it would help! Great looking Smith. Gosh, it sure is pretty!

No, you do not need counseling. You need more revolvers.
That is a fine first year HP. I have one that is almost first year (I think it shipped in the 13th month after production began), and your photo makes me want to dig it out and look at it again.

Congratulations - that's a great piece.
But you can't put that up without telling the backstory...
How did you come across that one and did it come with any of the original "extras" like a box, papers or tools?

I always think that every time I buy another one, that is just money that is safely invested...unlike the Dow, S&W"s like that one are safe like gold!

Heres one at the last of the 28s. It is a 28-3 non pinned and non recessed. Lot's made between these two.

Hello Dpsix
Nice First Year Highway Patrolman, Now you need to find your self a 4" example First year Highway Patrolman. It was the then President of S&W Carl Helstrom's Wife that Named the gun "Highway Patrolman". They became available in April 1954. Here is Mine that shipped Just Three month's after they were released being July 1954. It came to me with it's original serial numbered Magnas shown on it and the trigger shoe shown on it.....

Actually Kurt, the name was suggested by Mrs. Florence Van Orden of The Evaluators Ltd. to Carl Helstrom.
dpsix - You state that the gun is a first year, do you have a letter or are you going by serial number. In either case, what is the serial number or range. I have one that shipped in April of 1955, so it it right on the edge of the first year.
The first reported serial number is S 103,500. Does anyone know the actual shipping date of that gun?

I had mine Lettered. S/N S114306 was shipped on 7/7/1954. It was subsequently hard chromed after-market as was a common practice in the 50's. But I love it anyway!

Thank you Blujax. That narrows the shipping date down a bit.
