Default 1947 K22 Help

I picked this up a week ago and was hoping to use it in this years pistol league along side my 41.

However its not reliably firing cci ammo- but it seems to shoot federal without a misfire.. i compared the firing pin to my 17 no dash from 1961 and they seem different. the firing pin on the 17 has a conical tip but the pre-17 seems worn flat.. if it has in fact gone bad where can i find a replacement? numerich and brownells seem to have none.

Thanks for any help.

Have you looked at the back side of the cylinder? If so is it marked with indents from the firing pin making contact with it? I think what you have is a "timing" issue that has worn or broken the tip of the firing pin. As to finding another one, post a request in the wanted to buy section here or sell me the "broken" gun for, perhaps $20.00... Kyle

You may already know this so excuse me if it's too elemenatry. Is the hammer spring tension screw all the way tight? Many assume this is a double action adjustment screw. Does the hammer spring look thinned or non-original?

Definitely take a close look at the hammer spring. I've purchased three used S&W revolvers that had "Bubba" gunsmith work done to the spring. Two had been heated with a torch to reduce the temper and the third looked like it was re-arched somehow. All three revolvers function perfectly with their new springs. I used Wolff, though OEM costs about the same or less.

I too have a 1947 K22, but I will never know if it works or not. Too nice for me too shoot. Yeah, I know it won't hurt to shoot it but I have shooters for that purpose. I rather doubt it will shoot any better than my M617 6" no dash anyway.Collectors ramblings. Big Larry

I also just purchased a real nice 1947 "one liner" K 22 that I have put 50 rounds of CCI SV through without incident. I put a spent casing in just now and pulled the trigger. The outer rim of the casing has a 1/16"-3/32" flat round indent imbedded about 1/32" deep on it. When at rest the firing pin is flush with the front of the flash protector/firing pin housing. Jim

Well you definitely investigated all the 'usual suspects'. You could try a shim under the tension screw. There are over 20 well known suppliers of old Smith parts and then S&W itself.

Popperts Parts, Chicoine, Jack First, etc., etc. Just google.

I'm with eljaydubya--seem to remember my '47 K22 has a flat-tipped pin but I will check when I get home and report back if I am wrong.
