Hey Joe,

That's a prize! A very nice and elusive Transistional 6 screw with very early features:

Pre war war rd top svc grips with pre war flat silver medallions.
Double pinch thumb latch.

Is it a pre war double pinch latch with relieved thumb pad?

Or the 2nd style used post war, (first ‘new design' post war style thumb piece), still has the double 'pinch' but without relief cuts under checkered pad?

Jim, is that a .22/32 HFT? I don't have any .22/32 HFT's in my database with 486 as the first three digits. I have examples starting with 472, 482, 483, 484, 488, 492 and 495.

Once again we need a button beside the "LIKE" button that says, "LUST!" This gun is on so many people's "Grail List" I'll probably never even get to see one sold!

Bill, another screamer. These are genuine anachronisms! Is it possible that serial # may be 657312?

“.32 Reg. Police Target Post War Transitional” 'I' frame, 4" barrel, 6 screw, non-Model #’d with small trigger guard and leaf mainspring (pre Improved 'I' frame). This model still has the smaller pre war frame window size and cylinder diameter of 1.267”, with post war non- chamfered flute corners.

Frame serial # 657298 stamped on front grip strap above the strain screw matching all other #'d parts including stocks, 9 locations in all, including rear sight and both front and rear sight blades. Rear sight has single elevation screw, no check screw.

Pre war/early post war rebated rear grip strap with post war type 16 lpi checkering, round cornered border on round top stocks with curved nickel plated brass post war medallions. The pre war sights are obvious, supplied w/special modified post war blue all steel sight adjusting tool (SAT) to fit tiny sight screws. Pre war/early post war hammer with sliding bar hammer block safety, post war grooved trigger, and 3rd type post war (and post 1966 after I frames became J frames) non-sculpted thumb piece, while all other I frames of the period still had the third type flat latch.

Most features totally out of character with the non-target Pre Model 31 guns of the 1957 period! But it has the 3rd and last style straight ejector rod with left hand thread, no patent dates on barrel and 4 line address. A very convoluted transition model for sure. Brief details of these 196 guns are on page 128, 3rd edition, Standard Catalog of S&W, Supica and Nahas, pictured pg. 127.

The tiny steel/nickeled pre war SAT shown was mot issued with this model of course, but is correct for pre war sights.

This is the correct SAT, also unique, that this model was supplied with:

Here's a pure post war version of the above gun that S&W should have made.

This is a favorite .32 shooter, a non-factory target model, my homemade .32 'Kit Gun', 4" J frame Model 30-1, 788296, 1966 vintage. Target features added: adj rear sight, ramped front sight w/sight base, hammer, trigger, and modified post war factory I/J frame target stocks. Changed the flat cyl latch to a pre war "double pinch" latch. I also reamed a spare cyl to 32 H&R Mag for it.

I just looked at it. It is the double pinch latch with relieved thumb pad. I dont see any hammer block. I have a Terrier to compare it to, SN 54891 which has the double pinch thumb pad without relief cuts. It also has a plainly visible hammer block.

Jim, you are absolutely right about the serial #. I was looking at a slightly blurred picture of the serial number and misread the first digit as a 5 instead of a 6. I love your "homemade" .32 Kit Gun!

It has a post war hammer block safety, cylinder release, and 4 line address! These type guns were not flying off dealer shelf's back in the day.Serial # 521201

I was oiling up my guns the other day and had these out of the safe, so lined them up and took a picture for this thread. I thought it was about time to join the I frame posting. Interesting to note the wide variety of offerings for the early I frames. I will let you guys do the identifications.

I love these pre war-post war hybrids. Usually completed before the war, in inventory, and then updated w/sliding bar hammer block safety to get some small frames on dealer shelves post war; per Roy Jinks. Extra cool with scarce 6" barrel.

Another screamer!

The big question: Regulation Police or Hand Ejector - does it have a rebated grip frame under the extended 2 screw target stocks?

Jim, I know it's close to the intro of the Regulation Police, but this is a .32 hand ejector. No rebated frame and serial # on butt.

Bill,

Thx, I had to ask! I'm always thinking about anomalies. We all know with S&W, the main rule is, there are no rules. :-)

Gary,

That's a very nice eclectic group! I strained my neck looking at the upside down models, but well worth it! :-)

A very nice early 4 digit, 4 screw! Yes, it is a Model of 1953, but therefore built on the NEW I frame forging, with larger trigger guard and longer grip frame, not the Improved I which only introduced the coil mainspring and still has 5 screws.

This 1919 .32 actually can be a pocket pistol for me as the tactical pants I wear have VERY deep pockets.

Plain Old Dave,

I like your attitude! A pair of tactical (or cargo) pants with a long barreled 32 S&W I-frame and you're ready to face your next adventure. Don't forget a good clasp knife, a compass and some strike anywhere matches in a genuine Marble's™ match safe to be ready for anything. I might have to "settle for" a 4" barrel on my adventure seeking outfit, but that 6" does have a certain flair (or is it "flare"?)

What a very cool thread. For those who have posted about .22/32 HFT's or Bekeart models, please make sure that I have your info in my database. I have information on close to 1,000 of this model and climbing. No personal information is recorded, just details on survivors. Thanks.

If you want information on your .22/32 HFT, I am always willing to look it up and see what I have and share it with you. Also interested in the early "kit" guns in the 500,000 serial ranges.

My two. I really like the vivid colors on the case hardened parts.

Top is a .32 HE, Improved I, 3¼", coil main spring, 5-screw, round sight, small trigger guard, 3rd series post-war latch, short round butt, all matching numbers. According to Hondo44, it probably left the factory in July or August 1952 so it's my first birth year gun. There's no trace of it ever having been fired.

The snub is also a .32: Model 31, Improved I, 2", 3-screw, flat latch, all matching numbers. Back when I first got it Hondo44 said it likely shipped in 1958. When I was 7 my grandmother taught me to shoot hers, which was like this one.

Here's mine with its "Walk in the Woods" holster.

And with its "Saturday Night Social" holster.

(Looks like I need to take some better pictures of this one....)

Since I started this thread some time ago, I acquired one more I-frame. The pictures below have taken recently to confirm that it's not nickel, but a high polish blue, and to show the box. This is a 22/32 kit gun with a unique history. The frame was serialed in 1940, but the gun was not shipped until 1951. I contains both pre-war and post-war parts and mechanisms. Only a very few were produced in this manner, making it quite a S&W collector jewel. It walked in off the street at a small gun show a few years ago, and I had to have it. It's in near-perfect condition. I then found an original-era correct box for it, thanks to a member of this forum.

I own very few I frames - but in keeping with John's wonderful transitional Kit Gun (pretty rare birds), here is another one with the hard to find narrow tip SAT that came with post war guns that sported pre-war sights (BTW, the SAT came to me from another gracious member of this forum, along with a Long Tube Pre-27 Gold Box):

Default .32 Hand Ejector (Postwar)

Here is one I picked up last year from a Pawn Shop.

It does not appear to be reblued (to me), or even fired much. Came with the original red box.

I really like the diamond walnut stocks.

.32 Hand Ejector (Postwar) (Pre-Model 30).
S/N 583,4xx
I believe this one dates to approx. 1950.

I haven't shot it, and don't know if I will. The white flecks on the gun are from the (incorrect) wax paper in the box.

Very nice gun and that "wax paper" or "vapor paper" looks correct to me for a 1950's shipped S&W. Several of my 1950 boxed guns came with the same type of vapor paper...

Default ID a circa Octoberish 1917 Hand Ejector?

Just picked this Regulation Police up thinking I could use the grips on another pistol. I can't, as the "I" frame grips won't work on a K frame. I am new to the older revolvers so bear with me.

The serial on this pistol is 47XX. It looks to be nickel, maybe original (?), and has some scratches and light under the barrel corrosion. But overall, the grips are in great condition and has awesome lockup.

Am I close to an October 1917 birth date?

Yes sir, that's a nice early issue!

Below #5000 , all eight known are confirmed to have shipped in 1917. Here's two of them:
#4301 shipped on Sept. 15, 1917, RP, patent date on the stocks, no logo on frame.
#43XX shipped on 9/15/17

If it was originally nickel from the factory, it will not have a B preceding the serial # under the barrel.

The hammer spur has been altered. Either the spur was broken off and welded back or more likely IMO, it was angled up on purpose. They are a bit hard to grasp for cocking as they come from the factory.

Thanks Hondo! So to confirm, if there is NO B under the barrel before the serial number, it is a factory nickel gun?

Correct. No B. And it may have an N for nickel but not always.

The B or N can also be found on rear face of yoke, on rear face of cyl by itself, behind the extractor star, and on Pre War guns, by itself on right side grip frame on commercial guns.

That's even earlier than a Pre Model 30, it's a pre Model of 1953; an Improved I frame 5 screw!

8/17/51 #557875 .32 Improved I, is the earliest recorded shipped in my data base.
Smiths didn't ship in serial # order but others #'d near yours shipped as follows:

577553 Shipped on 8/13/52
589413 Shipped on July 18, 1952
