Default Pre-28, First-Year, Highway Patrolman

I picked this up last week. 1954, 4", Highway Patrolman. It is an unfired example.

Beautiful. I always enjoy seeing anything made in my birth year. I have one like yours, 4", shipped July 20, 1954, but it has some bluing loss near the muzzle, and right side checkering is a bit buggered, probably holster wear. If you don't mind, how much did it cost?

First rate!

I have a barely fired first year HP with a six-inch barrel, but yours is better. It looks flawless.

I paid more than $500 and less than $1500

It is not completely flawless. I would rate it at 98%. The barrel and frame are very clean, but the cylinder has some freckling from the box. The collector that acquired it for me thinks it was from being stored in a cardboard box...cardboard can hold moisture.

Thanks.

Lefkiguy, as a point of reference I think I paid $750 for the one I mentioned. It came with its box, which is in very good shape but has a faded label. There were no docs or tools. Or I may have paid $800. A lot of guns and money have flowed (or maybe I should say "washed back and forth") under the bridge since I made the deal about 18 months ago.

Alas, I once owned a nice first or second year production with matching magna stocks -- and I traded it. Will somebody please come to East Texas and kick my *****. Really, I am very happy for you and I would be willing to spend whatever you spent to get my old one back.

Great example. It is always nice to obtain a first year revolver.

Wonderful find 4-screw. It amazes me how there are still "unused" specimens out there.

Your post got me thinking about the HP I just picked up last week. I guess I'm not very attentive but I did not know that '54 was year one. It just so happens that my "new" one might actually be about as old at it gets (S1133xx). I guess a letter is in order.

I just grabbed it because it was a good shooter and a pretty good deal (~450). After I got it home I noticed the unexpected bonus that it had the original stocks. (The pictures make it look more worn than it is.)

And another excellent score! You guys have picked up some first rate HPs at enviable prices.

jhvaughn2, my HP is S113404, so yours should be near the same date as mine (as far as "near" can be with S&W, as we know, as I have 2 pre-29 44 Magnums, and the 4 screw which is numbered 330 later shipped one month before the 5 screw model.)

Here is a first year Pre-28 that belongs to my Mom. This one shipped in September of 1954 to California Hardware Co. in Los Angeles, CA. Its sn# is S 115XXX.

LOBO....I almost think yours, with that honest wear, looks better than an unfired one. Very nice.
