Default Using 38 spl. in 357 or 44 spl. in 44 mag.

Can this create any problems? I've heard that it can but I don't know exactly what the problem might be.

It won't hurt the gun.
Worst issue is firing the shorted cartridges will leave carbon deposits in the chambers that may hinder subsequent chambering of the longer magnum rounds.
Prompt and thorough cleaning after firing will preclude this problem.

exactly right! That's the only issue you will have. Just clean as needed, and shoot away

I don't like it (Specials in Magnums) or do it but I find that puts me in the minority, and a small minority it is. I like shooting Specials in guns originally chambered for those cartridges. Specials in Magnums always seemed like some form of cheating to me. YMMV!

Default 38 in 357

agree with dave t, i used to use 38 in 357 and had to put the brush in a drill to get the deposits out. now i have plenty of both 357 and 44 brass and just use them.

I agree totally! Clean after EVERY shooting session and you'll be fine.
Its those that shoot - don't clean - shoot another day etc. and let the carbon build up and then try a magnum length cartridge that should experience the issue of difficulty getting the cartridge in to the cylinder.

Since chamber rings may cause extractions problems in magnum chamgers, I have always used magnum cases at or around "special" loads.
