I'd like to get a modern style holster for my 1917. Pretty much for just range use and I'm thinking of competing in our VERY informal Thr. night combat shoot against the autos. Do I want an N frame holster? Any recommendations?
My local shop has a large box full of used holsters, I'll bring my 1917 next week and see if I can fit one.

Old Revolvers never look right in 'new' Holsters.

I myself would never do it.

There are many extant 'period' Holsters ( Hip Holsters, especially, of course ) out there for the S&W M1917 Revolver, of all sorts of styles, makers, kinds.

Even if it takes a while, to find the right one for one's own taste or application or both, it is well worth while to do.

I myself am still looking for a 'period' ( 1920s or 1930s anyway ) IWB and also Shoulder Holster for a 3, and also a 4 inch N-Frame...

Hip Holsters for the Service Length Barrels are fairly easy to find compared to Holsters of the period for shorter Barrels, or for IWB or Shoulder-Rig...let alone both.

I just got a nice open-top Police type, canted Hip Holster today in fact, on ebay, for a 5 inch N-Frame, and, the Holster likely dates to the mid or latter 1930s.

And, as usual, seller had no idea what it was for, so, one has to gauge these things somehow, to tell or guess.

This one actually had SW45 stamped on the back, so...that helped me tell, and, nice work when one can get it on that!

That sounds like a great idea to me. That way, you get one for a decent price and you can check it for fit, comfort, wear and tear, ...

Otherwise, you should be able to find a new holster easily. Your barrel is 5.5", so you may have to buy one meant for a 6" N-Frame, unless you find a maker who has a model designed especially for the M1917. But that would probably be more or less a replica of the military holster, which is contrary to your stated objective.

Bianchi and Desantis both make good thumb break holsters for N frames still. El Paso Saddlery makes some vintage looking holsters that are also top quality.

Pacific Canvas makes a historical repro. Mine ran about $40. They also make a shoulder holster for Victory(s) (ps: It will fit a British Victory with the longer barrel)

Found a Strong holster in the used holster bin, except it was a lefty. At least I got the numbers so I just need to order the "right" one now.

I've been searching on line. For some reason Strong Leather holsters are hard to find, for me anyway. I'm looking for a "STRONG 933 11" right hand.
Prefer used, possibly new depending on price.

You don't say? What style holster? Do you have any pictures? How much were they asking for this holster and how much would you want for shipping?

As a lefty, it's not easy finding holsters for some of these old warhorses.

Thanks.

I'll be back there Thr. night. The shop owner is a lefty so I think some of the holsters were his. I'm sure he doesn't want much for them. Actually there were 2 of the same model number holsters if you are interested in more than one. Let me know by PM how much you would be willing to spend. I would guess shipping would be $5-$10 ? I could package them for you and ship them out.

It's for an N frame S&W with a 6" bbl. So the 5.5" 1917 fits nicely.

From what I recall it was similar to this style.
