Found a 1917 for Sale
I'm looking at a 1917 military model that has a $650.00 price tag. The serial numbers match and the barrel and chambers are mint however, the finish is worn in places and has some nicks. Also, I don't know if the stock are original because they are checkered. The lock-up is tight and doesn't appear to have been fired much.
I've always wanted a 1917, however, I'd like to know if the price is in the ballpark. Any ideas would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

Welcome to the Forum.
Is the butt marked "US Army Model of 1917"? If so, it should have smooth grips. What is the serial number, as found on the butt? You can post it as "123xxx" if you wish, for privacy concerns.
The grips should have serial number on them, inside of the right grip. It would probably be written in pencil, which may have faded or been removed by age, solvent, etc.
IMHO, the price is in the right ballpark, but having the correct grips would be much better.

My buddy recently bought a mint S&W 1917 here in San Diego for $750. He might have gotten it down a bit to $700, but it was in such beautiful shape that he did not quibble.
Good luck. They are a really interesting old gun that represents an important era in our history. And they are fun to shoot.

Prices I have seen on 1917's are up around $700-$800 for 90% and above. Grips don't sound original.

From what I've seen lately, that sounds a little bit high, especially if the grips are not correct. But not by much. With a little patience, good shooters can still be found for $500-550. I've saw a nice, low grade, collector example at a recent GS with a $750 asking price.
You can always make an offer and find correct grips on E-Bay or GB for $25-50.
BTY, they are a hoot to shoot!

I went ahead and bought it today. It's a later one, the serial number is 1589XX and it must have been in the Brit's hands at some time or another because there are proof marks on the barrel near the receiver and behind each flute on the cylinder. Also, there is no serial number on the bottom flat of the barrel even though it is marked "UNITED STATES PROPERTY" and was wondering if that is normal.
Well, it's off to the range to see how it shoots. Thanks for the input.
