My first, (not counting a heritage series that I got rid of because it just didn't seem like a real k 22, had nice case coloring I just couldn't love it.) That I picked up last week. Within a week I had gotten a 17-3 also.
These things are addictive and I now that I have two shooters I need to get a couple of safe queens. You know, just for serenity....
1947 with tapered rib and non numbered grips that I fell in love with the moment I held it.

Buried in Storage now, so relying on an older image to suffice -

Mine's a youngster in this thread. A 17 no dash shipped in 1959 and purchased by me in 1971. It's been shot a whole bunch over the last 40 years. I had it tuned up by S&W 3 years ago.

I like the Tylers. I've got 'em on my '48 5-screw K22, and they make all the difference for me.

That's one beautiful K22 Masterpiece. I'm particularly attracted to the target stocks and the fact that they are numbered to the gun. With an October 1955 ship date, I believe they are an early example with the extractor relief and appear more shallow than later examples . . . or is it just the angle of the picture?

Perhap's your's was a Transitional Box used between the Gold Boxes yet before the standard solid border style boxes like mine. Or it may be they did not have Boxes made up that would allow the Target stock's to fit in them as yours has the Five hole cornerbraces and mine has the four hole corner braces that they used for Magna stocks. My box is serial numbered to my gun as are the stocks, warranty card and all of other item's it came with from the factory.

Here is my "one liner". Got it last year for $500 but with early target grips that I changed out to un-numbered early Magna's. It still has an early target hammer that was of course added in the 50's. It does have an ampersand in the crane area. Serial K 1184.

Hello CJS57
That is a super nice Transitional K-22. They did not use the Larger Mushroom shaped extractor end like your's very long in the Post-War K-22's. You stole that gun for $500.00 they are very Scarse to find like that... The Only change I would make is to Place the hammer it has with the Speed Hammer that it came with... Hammerdown

I had been looking for one for about a year, in my price range. Found it several months ago. Wonderful made gun in 1955. Now I need a Combat Masterpiece to go along with it.

Kurt, I completely agree with you on CJS57's revolver; it's a nice one, and he got a deal. But we seem not to be using the same terminology on ejector rod knobs. I would consider this to have a just a "large" knob, as opposed to no knob on the later guns. This style was used through the 1930s and in WWII, then was phased out in postwar production. The "mushroom" knob as I have understood the terminology is an even larger two-diameter knob used from the earliest hand ejectors up through most of the 1920s.
Here's a picture of that earlier style on a 1917. This is the style that requires two cuts of different depths on the underside of the barrel to accommodate the knob when the cylinder is locked in place. The 1930s knob required only a single cut to the underside of the barrel.
Not trying to argue, just trying to see if we are on the same page with a minor difference about labels.

Hardly qualifies to be in this fine company, but this Feb. 1953 K22 CM is a great little gun.

I sold my "one-liner" K-22 (6") a couple months back so I am no longer an official member of, The Club.
However, a few nights ago I was going thru some old sporting magazines and came across this.

1952 K 22 Masterpiece
This K22 was an attempt to hit my 1951 date of birth, but when Roy Jinks issued this letter it gave this pistol some historical significance. The original owner was a professional baseball pitcher. The fact that this revolver was sent to him at no charge by Smith and Wesson makes it more unique.

I purchased my first K22 today. All the numbers match except for one grip. Its a little rough on the outside but inside it looks like its barely been shot. I'm pretty happy with my first Combat Masterpiece.

WHAT a thread! ..and what a history of fine revolvers. Thanks to everyone for sharing. Guess I'd better get out my cell phone and take some pics of my meager collection to add to the thread!

That would make it correct. Only one will be numbered. If it matches, they are original to your revolver.

This is a birth year (1955) CM I lucked into last year in a multi gun purchase. It has a TH and a TT but notice the wear on the side of the trigger, any ideas as to what may have caused that? Not really concerned as I paid too little for the gun but curious nonetheless.
thanks, Rob

The gun may have had the target trigger added and they fitted it a bit.

Could be. I don't have the gun in hand but I see the same thing on the hammer. I know that the previous owner liked to have his guns "fine tuned".

I have been amazed at the accuracy of mine as others have mentioned. About 1952 production, it wears Pointer Pup plastic grips but I also have a set of correct (unnumbered) wood grips.

Its a spectacular gun. I was shipped in January of 1948, too.
But now for the problem (not sour grapes). I hope you've got the letter (what day in 48?) When Jim Supica actually announces he and Rick are coming out with a 4th edition, send a copy of that letter to them. Then help try to get the table of ship dates to serials revised. The table everyone has been printing is just wrong. Your's proves the point.

Both of these K-22's date to 1951. The top is an early serial #, is a sold 95-97% with numbers matching stocks. Traded in a shooter grade 1954 era to get this high grade example. Bottom one is 90-95% with original gold box and numbers matching magna stacks. Pictured wearing a set of shooter grade walnut diamond target stocks. Both are great shooters too.

K22 which shipped in June 1958 pictured with everything I got with it. The gun is a K22, not a Model 17, so it must either have been made at the latest in 1957 and sat around the factory awhile or have been assembled with parts made well before the ship date. It shoots great!
And a solo shot:

Ultimate per-61 K-22 showcase
K2414-my father in law's good friend & hunting partner ordered this revolver as soon as he returned home after WW II. Colorado Saddlery gun rug.
These next 2 photos are with my new iPad-too hot to photograph outside where I normally set up. I'll find the right lighting eventually.
A model 17, 1958 production with numbered grips & box.
1953 Combat Masterpiece with numbered grips.

Pa's gun. My squirrel gun. Not shiny, not 100% blue. Gray and pitted. It's perfect.

Here's my humble submission. K-22 #20,918. Shipped to Kelam Hardware in Roanoke VA on May 20, 1948. I swapped a Model 48 for it in 1972, and felt I got the better end of the deal; mostly because .22 Magnum ammo was $3.00 / box at the time and I could barely afford to feed that model 48. The trade took place in Troutville, not 20 miles from where the gun originally shipped to.
It's not in as fine a shape as many of the beauties shown on this thread, but the wear that's been put on it was mostly done by me; either carrying it on a trapline, walking in the woods, plinking, or more recently shooting steel plates. Best of all, I don't have to worry about getting a mark on it while shooting it. For 40 years it has unquestionably been my favorite firearm, though lately my Pre M-27 has been giving me second thoughts.

I'm glad this thread was brought back up. There are some real stunners here!
I'd forgotten about Drew's gun that's still in Cosmoline--wow!
It's also interesting that there's more than one poster who's found that their four inch CM/18 is more accurate than their six inch guns. In my small sample, two six inch K22s and one 22 CM, the same thing is true.
Surely there's more out there!
