Looks like a .38 M&P model of 1902 first change to me. Assuming that there is no trigger guard screw, it would be a pre 5 screw 4 screw. Not to be confused with a post 5 screw 4 screw.
Welcome to the forum. Should you be selling, I would be interested.

Nice gun. I agree with JSR III about its identity. I can't make my eyes tell if that is a 6" or 6.5" barrel. Either is possible, but i think the longer one would be a little cooler.
On the link that didn't work -- the trailing IMG needs a slash in it, like this: [/IMG]. Then it will work. The opening IMG tag is just fine as is.

Thanks guys, there is no trigger guard screw. I couldn't sell this gun, it's been in my family since my great grandpa was in his 20's. He carried it while running moonshine on horseback! Also it's a 6.5 barrel. Thanks for the help on the link (I'm not too good at it).

Nice! I love seeing these old heirloom guns staying in the family with heirs who appreciate them for what they are. You'll find tons of info on this forum.
For $50 you can get a letter from the Smith&Wesson historian pin-pointing when it left the factory. (on the S&W website)
Treat it with a little respect and you'll be passing it down as well...

Thanks for all the help! I wish I could shoot it, but I believe it's a lil too loose. It's had a hard life!

Glad to hear you are keeping it, to many are discarded and it is a shame to lose family history that way.
