Default Pre-27 Price Check

So I bid on and won a 5" Pre-27 on a Sunday night a few weeks back. Not even sure what possessed me to bid. Anyways, as you can see, stocks are not correct. There is some freckling on the right side and some light surface rust under stocks. Light bluing wear on front of barrel. Strong bore, good lock up and great action. I guess I would rate it overall at about 85%. I paid $1300 + tax & shipping. The auction stated it included a wood presentation case. When gun arrived at FFL, no case. I did not accept transfer and contacted seller who stated I could return due to typo. I went back to FFL and fondled again. Having second thoughts about returning now. Really not sure of value. Any input most appreciated.

I suggest you negotiate a discount with them to satisfy their need to move the gun and your desire to own it.

Think I'd try to get a hundred backs back from the seller. On the other hand, he may prefer that you return it so he can try again. $1300 for a 5 inch pre-27, even with incorrect stocks, is a very good price where I shop. I paid about $1500 for one (with correct stocks) about five years ago. Good luck.

I'd keep it. Like said, see if you can get a little back.
That looks better than 85% to me.

Since it was his mistake, to undo the deal he should pay shipping both ways and refund any FFL fees you incurred. That would be the fair thing to do.

He will probably balk at that, so then you could propose that he make a monetary adjustment for the lack of the advertised box. You're in the driver's seat. It seems like an honest seller would agree to one option or the other.

I would expect to get one in better condition for that money but maybe I am behind the times. A 5" pre-27 is something I would love to have.

They never shipped with wood boxes and it will just sit around and gather dust anyway. you can try to get him to return some of your money for his mistake, but keep it. You will be glad you did. The price is not out too far out of line in my country. Plus, you get to enjoy that one as long as you want to. Those pre 27s are great guns!

At least negotiate for shipping reimbursement. Minimally. Looks like a decent revolver.

The way I look at it, a deal is a deal and you got the shaft. He needs to either send you a box or the value thereof. Nothing wrong with asking him to make this right.

That's where I think you should start. Where it goes from there is up to you. Worst case scenario, you can just keep it no matter what the negotiations yield.

Default 5" is still a 5"...premium usually!

I just sold the 6-1/2" pre-27 "S" pre-fix, all correct with matching number grips on this Forum a few months back for $1,600.00 and it went very quick. Mine Lettered as shipping October 16, 1952 to Rex Firearms in NY. I shipped fully insured so I netted a tad over $1500 for the gun.

So...my opinion...you knew it had incorrect grips when you bid, but got gyped out of a wooden case. The one you won is a 5" and I understand that the 5" are premium over 6-1/2" all day long among collectors, and shooters like the balance of the 5" better it seems, so yea....if you can get a $100 deduct fine...if not..keep it, or from the above posts...looks like you could flip it for your money back pretty quickly.

Best of luck...it does look awful good from here

I had a similar problem some years ago. I asked for a partial refund and the seller (a dealer) would not comply. I left a scathing bad feedback online for him, which made him mad. He agreed to the rebate if I changed the review to A+, so I did.

I understand your frustration, but think it's worth $1300 without the goodies. However, I think you have a little leverage to do some negotiating. End the end, for $1300 I wouldn't let loose of a nice 5" Pre27.

That's a nice revolver, and I would keep it. I would also see what display cases are selling for and try to get that much of a refund. I'm thinking $200 would be a fair discount, so I'd ask for $250. Used gun dealers are getting the reputation formerly held by used car dealers, and rightly so. Keep the gun, demand a discount. Good luck!

Keep it.....

With some of the horror stories I read here about
shipping and for the amount of money for a refund...say $100.00.
I would not take the risk.

I would look for some nice stag or proper diamond N frame
factory stocks.
Then flip the shoes it's wearing.

Keep it!! Try to get money back, but if the dealer balks, we all know there's a special circle in that bad afterlife place for gun dealers. You will still have a fine revolver at a good price, he will have bad karma.

Oh and report that on the site. Don't theses places all have feedback functions? Tell the world what he's like to do business with.

The piece is a keeper. Prices for all pre-1980 N-Frame revolvers have rapidly increased, and $1,300 is a fair price for what you have, IMO, especially for a mid-50s 27 with the desirable 5" barrel. With auctions, buyer beware. But on balance you did pretty good. You will not lose money on this. Cheers

Certainly ask for something since the advertised box was not delivered...still a nice gun at that price..

It's not pristine and should make a good shooter. A while back I got an older 5" N frame with lots of small freckling on a S&W factory refinish. Thing had Goodyear's on it. I was going to need to fit an oversize hand. All the above were known and considered before purchase. It's a great shooter I can enjoy without worry of loosing value.

Find a suitable holster to tote in in; I grabbed a Simply Rugged to fit mine.

Go shoot yours and enjoy!

I tried. Wednesday I proposed to customer service that if they discounted $100 (which I stated was about half the price of a decent wood presentation case), I would accept the transfer. No response. I have emailed twice since then, no response. I can't even get them to commit to pay for the return shipping.

In your original post it sounded like they were agreeable to unwinding the deal. Have you tried calling them? Maybe they are busy and not real prompt about reading e-mails.

If they will not give you $100 back and they expect you to eat all the shipping/FFL fees if you return it, you would be justified in leaving them a scathing negative feedback on GB. If it gets to that point, I would probably just keep the gun and not do business with them again.

I'd keep it, that's a good price for that gun in this area.

Since I've joined this site I keep hearing about these mythical sub-$500 N-frames, and they just don't exist, at least around here.

There was even a guy about a year ago claiming he still buys N-frames at $250. I'd LOVE to find that kind of deal, lol.

Good luck with your decision!

I think they exist almost nowhere.

Maybe buying them off of some poor widow who's afraid of them and believed what her husband told her he paid for them.

Or they're just a troll who likes to spread disinformation.

On an M1 Carbine Forum I used to frequent, we used to get that. Prices were escalating rapidly up to the unheard of (at that time) level of $600 -$800 for nice examples.

You could count on some guy showing up and telling you he buys them all the time for $100 to $150. When pressed about where these deals are, he would say "You just need to know where to look."

Total BS of course but anyone can join up and post anything.

Getting back on topic, Mr. Spin132: you have a pretty nice gun and should come out ok enough no matter what you decide. I would stay diplomatic (for now) and try to talk to someone in authority. Calling on the weekend may not be the best time, but you don't want to wait forever either. Good Luck.

Jack, I have tried calling to no avail, but found out why this morning. Finally recieved email response. They are located in Kentucky and have been closed due to inclement weather. Makes sense, my daughter's boyfriend lives in Lexington and was stuck for 9 hours on I-75 2 days ago. I feel kinda bad that I besmirched them earlier. They stated that they would reply to my offer/questions on Monday. Will update then. Thanks to all who offered advice!
