38 S&W regulation police
Hey I'm looking at a 38 regulation police in great shape, I would have sworn it was a re-blue till I looked at it close the S/N is 327XX. What would you think its worth and I would be intrested in what the correct box looks like and how scarce they are I don't remember seeing any on ebay or the fourm.
Oh ya It has the original grips and its a 4". Thanks any info would be appreciated.

Sounds like a good gun. You didn't ask, but that serial number indicates it was probably shipped around 1929-1930. At that time it would have come in a hinge-top dark red box with a greenish end label. I think the box would have been the variety that collectors call the display box (or patent box, because S&W patented the design). It was hinged at the bottom, and the front corners of the bottom half were beveled so the full-height top could rotate up. The older hinge box (which might still have been in use) was hinged at the top. It might be hard to find one. My impression is that the survival rate on prewar boxes for small-frame revolvers is not good.
RPs in high condition have been rising in price in the last year. I have seen high-90s guns offered at $600-750. What is the asking price on the one you are looking at?

Pass it on to the forum if you don't get it. I'd love a chance at it!

That would be good price for the gun you described.

I agree with David. I paid $425 for a 98%er 4" in 2004. Boxes are hard to find. None of mine are original boxes.
If you don't want to get it, I'll take it. Good find!

Although a couple of years down the road the story on RP 327XX abruptly ends.

Sorta ends and perhaps began again, as I own a 327XX RP 38 S&W in excellent shape purchased from a store in Opie's neck of the woods. I shot a cylinder through 'er in 2012.
Too nice for me to carry and I hate to shoot a queen.
