Default Model 10 year history pre victory

I have a Model 10 chambered in 38S&W.Serial number 993366 with a 5" barrel.Has what looks like flying bombs stamped on most of the gun.Has a stamping Not British above the Made in USA on right side of frame.Has "UNITED STATES PROPERTY" stamped on left side of top strap.Has "W.B" stamped on bottom of grip and right side of barrel.Paid $200.00 for this and shoots great.I know there were many produced and sent all over the world. This revolver is in either real nice original condition or has been done over at some point.Seems to be a dull or parkerized finish, but is nice.Seems to be a low serial number also.Any idea of history on this?

Hello Big:

Welcome to the Forum.

Your revolver would not be referred to as a Model 10 since the model marking system was not initiated by the factory until the mid-50s, long after your revolver was manufactured. I would refer to your gun as a "Pre-Victory", and most collectors will know immediately what you are talking about.

From the Victory Model Database, which my pal LWCmdr45 and I administer, I can estimate for you that your revolver was likely shipped from the factory in the May, 1942 time frame. It was a Lend Lease gun. it bears post-war markings ("Not English Make"). You will want to insure that it has not been re-chambered from .38 S&W to .38 Special as many were.

I can't comment on the finish or other details since that is hard to do in a meaningful way without photos or an eyeball exam.

You have nice, historical gun there. Enjoy it.

Thanks for the info.I have not figured out how to post pictures here yet.The barrel does say 38S&W on it.I have fired it a few times and enjoyed it.I felt for the price and the appearance it was worth it.Hard to find any Smith revolver in nice condition for $200.00.Thank you again.

Have you used the correct 38 S&W ammo? If it accepts 38 Special cartridges then it has been modified.

Yes,I use the corret ammo.38specials fit loosely,38s&w are tight as it should be.Ammo is a little expensive for it compared to 38special.Shop I bought it from, and spend most of my money at,stressed the ammo it uses to me.Really is a nice revolver.I realize now its not a true model 10 as stated above by Ordanceguy.I also own a true Model10 in 38special.I like the older revolvers for target shooting.
